    I went to boarding school with this girl and a friend of mine called me when the Modern Love came out to tell me it was about her. She was a very mellow, chill girl and I think it's evident from her response that she is used to dealing with this from her mother and doesn't really let her mother faze her too much. Good for her, I would completely freak out if this was my mother. #joycemaynard

    Am I mistaken in thinking that BREAKING INTO someone's e-mail account is fucking unforgivable and possibly criminal?

    Also, this: "When I was very young, my mother read my diary. And though I loved my mother, I don’t think I ever forgave her." So, the exact thing happened to her, she felt violated and then she did it to her own daughter?

    Wow. Just, wow. That is a level of emotional retardation that is really hard to beat. #joycemaynard

    @GirlCat: I agree. I hate when people like this use their "art/craft" to justify things which are really unjustifiable. And what about the boyfriend? Did she ask his permission to tell some intensely private things? Fuck this woman. Her talent does not make her any better than Octomom or the people from Rock of Love.

    As the daughter of two writers, I should point out here that this isn't typical. It probably is, though, of writers who write compulsively about their own first-person.

    As the daughter of an editor and a writer, ditto. Though I did learn that stories are different based on the teller due to my extended family's entirely different version of.... everything in our entire family. #joycemaynard

    @Hiroine Protagonist: I've never read the infamous stuff about Salinger, but a few years ago I'm pretty sure I read an essay she wrote (in Vogue, maybe?) about getting romantically involved with a guy in prison and it was just creepy as hell, not least because it seemed like she was inches away from moving him into the house with her children before even checking what he was convicted of (hint: not what he told her!). It was just so superior and smarmy and self-centered, yet un-self-aware it made my skin crawl. Before that, I'd read some things that suggested maybe people unfairly didn't like her because she got access to Salinger when important literary people didn't, or because she exposed some less-than-charming qualities about the man, but that essay put me squarely in the "Yuck, Joyce Maynard," category. #joycemaynard

    @MissNormaDesmond: Every birthday, my mother would call me to scream/wail/moan/swear into the phone reinacting my birth. All 37 hours worth. At the end, I'd have to send her a card and gift, and expressly thank her for having me and being so generous with her time and DNA.

    That braces comment, seriously, has been uttered by her. It was like deja vu to read it, hehe. #joycemaynard

    Never, not even at tax time, have I been happier that my Mom is an accountant.

    Maynard's essay is most interesting as a snapshot of the thinking that led her to violate the trust of someone she loved, and then to write about it with herself as the protagonist. #joycemaynard

    What about the man at the heart of this essay, the Haitian man who tested positive for HIV? He is pretty clearly identified by his girlfriend, by the travels they took together, by the clinic he used for treatment. Anyone think he is entitled to a vote before this personal detail of his life is published? Or is he a background character in the ongoing power struggle between this mother and daughter? #joycemaynard

    @midwesternmom: I've heard the editor of Modern Love speak about the column. Due to the rules of journalism, they have to use real names and whatnot. It's up to he authors to decide if they are ok with publishing, but generally subjects are contacted. #joycemaynard
