You say, "Next week, Blake Lively hosts the show." Some people might think that means next weekend. The Blake Lively show is December 5th. When does next week become this week anyway?
I'm bitter that I missed the liveblog last night, considering it was actually funny. The Mellow Show doesn't always deliver, but last night's was hi-larious. The Reba sketch was funny in a way that I didn't want but couldn't help.
The Mellow Show was hilarious. Oh my goodness, Dave Matthews was surprisingly funny.
And JGL wasn't too bad himself. He managed to be both excited and in-character for pretty much all his skits. Plus, he's pretty cute and can sing, apparently.
I was less impressed with JGL's delivery of "Make 'em Laugh", but the fact that they actually did it sends my heart soaring. "Singing in the Rain" is my favorite movie of all time. Pretty decent episode overall, but my boyfriend kept getting freaked out by JGL. He said his expressions were weird and everything seemed really forced.
@clockwise contemplates going counter: The whole thing is a reference to the 80s movie "Say Anything" where the main character played by John Cusack stands outside his ex's window and holds up a boom box to win back his girlfriend.
And out comes my bad 1970s band knowledge... Genesis was a band that at one time included both Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel - who would later go on to have solo careers. So, by adding "Sussuido" (a Phil Collins song) to "In Your Eyes" (a Peter Gabriel song) he was "reuniting Genesis".

@clockwise contemplates going counter: Both Peter Gabriel (In Your Eyes) and Phil Collins (Sussidio) were members of the defunct group Genesis, along with Mike Rutherford, who was also mentioned.
The whole sketch is a play on the scene from the movie Say Anything in which Lloyd Dobler stands outside his beloved's window, playing In Your Eyes on his boombox, in order to get her back.
@clockwise contemplates going counter: @vulcanized: I'm going to guess b/c the song Lloyd Dobler's boom box plays is "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, one of the original members of Genesis.
I think that Say Anything skit is really impressive, merely because any other actor I could think of that they would cast as Lloyd would have dissolved into a fit of giggles when offered a frozen grape. Imagine Jimmy Kimmel.
@Jack_Burton: I've loved him since Brick (a must see), and he just keeps getting better. What I remarked on the open threads last night is that he just seemed really excited to be hosting and gave it his all. I think that helped a lot. Plus, who knew the guy could sing?
@maybeimamazed02: Could you understand a word JGL said in that movie? I really struggled. What a frustrating film...why do they bother writing decent dialogue if the actors are just going to be made to deliver it in a monotone and at breakneck speed?
@heykoukla: What helped my roommate was to turn on the English subtitles. It took me a while to get used to it, but once I did I could comprehend it enough to get where the plot was going. And the more I watched it, the more I understood.
@MagsCO: Yes. The dialogue definitely takes some getting used to, but it's highly worth checking out. And JGL is FANTASTIC--I think it's his best work.
Between the Mellow Show and the Say Anything bit alone(my friend was like "did you write that?" in regards to that one...which speaks volumes about my sense of humor. hah.) I was happy with this episode.
On a semi related note: Did anyone else read the EW article regarding that infamous scene from Say Anything? I can't find a link to it so:
Apparently it took Cameron Crowe awhile to figure out what song to use. He decided on In Your Eyes because he was listening to his wedding tape and it came up. He used his connections to get in touch with Peter Gabriel who agreed to listen to it. When he eventually talked to him Gabriel's initial response was something to the effect of "I don't think that's the right usage" and was about to hang up before Crowe got him to clarify why. Apparently he said something like "well, when he over doses on the pills...."
Crowe was dumbfounded and asked him if he'd watched the scene to which Gabriel said: "wait, you're not the one making the movie about John Belushi?"
@tankearae: I read that! What was the dreadful Billy Idol ballad that Crowe almost chose instead? Just imagine how that would've changed the trajectory of pop culture to this very day...

I cracked up at "Genesis is reunited!", but I don't get the reference (if there is any).

When sketches aren't on-line it almost always has to do with musical clearance issues.
You called it, Hortense.
