I find it irritating that the author is holding up Audrey Hepburn as a model of 'self-respect', considering the poor woman battled with anorexia for most of her life.

I'd take Katherine Hepburn as my inspiration over Audrey any day, thanks.

@Diziet_Sma: She suffered from chronic malnutrition in WWII from Nazi occupation in the Netherlands and she had health problems such as an inability to process food well, edemas, and respiratory issues for the rest of her life. She did not have an ED.

@BlondeGoddess: Granted, nobody's the 'ideal' role model, because nobody's perfect. So let's say I think someone who may have been confused over her sexuality (first I've heard, but it fits, I guess) is a less-dangerous role model than someone who didn't eat properly, for whatever reason.

Weren't most of Audrey Hepburn's characters prostitutes or child like women who needed a man to complete them? Hell, Gigi is about a girl being groomed by her family to be an (under age) high class rent girl, and that's layers of creepy in itself. I know nothing about the actual actress beyond a few early career factoids, but I usually see he in photographs from her movies and none of those are what I'd call ideal role models.

I'm just going to throw out there that "emulation" is not a bad thing, in and of itself. It means recognizing the admirable in someone else, and attempting to incorporate that same admirable behavior -- it's just seeing someone as a role model, and I have certainly found role models useful in my life. (And, side note: it's a central tenet of Shia observance, if I'm not mistaken, in that each person is meant to choose for themselves a religious leader who they will "emulate," ie: follow.).

"Aping" is a bad thing, as is "following blindly." "Emulating," not necessarily.

1) Consider the comfort and safety of those around you. Wearing twelve gallons of perfume on mass transit, or driving recklessly under the influence of Blackberry/iPhone, or otherwise doing things that could cause deleterious effects on other people? Yeah, don't do those things.

2) Wear clothes that fit. They don't have to be expensive. Consider washing them occasionally, too.

3) Even if you disagree with someone, there's no reason to engage in personal attacks on them.

4) Give Tscheese a multi-million dollar book deal because she dispenses such wonderful advice.

@augie1: Yes, that cover made me think, "Am I the only one who realized Holly was basically a high-class call girl?" Also she was terribly, miserably unhappy. Not exactly my idea of a role model, no matter how fantastic her outfits were.

I am sooo tired of (Fill In the Blank)-Bashing -- be it Paris, or Lindsey, or Megan Fox, or whomsoever.

Being respectable ("classy") doesn't mean losing respect for the humanity of other people, even if you don't like what they're doing, even if you think that the way they live their lives does damage to an important cause. It means choosing to live a different way, and continuing to respect those around us.

How this rule extends to the likes of Dr. Tiller's murderer, or those who stole the election in Iran, or Dick Cheney, I am unsure. But for the vast majority of humanity, bashing is neither classy, nor useful.

@alextotheb: It internalizes "gentility" as concomitant with upper class - and, at least in "guidebooks" like this one or in similar pronouncements about what is "classy," defines it according to an aspirational consumer model of creating identity through a (luxury goods-laden) look.

I dunno. I think I'd rather take lessons from Countess Luann Fakey McFakerton DeLesseps. Her modern take on how to be a great big phony appeals to me more than some woman telling me I need to go around wearing pearls and sunglasses all the time. I got enough class already, I don't need a costume to prove it.
