Aren't most of them Ivy Leaguers as well? So I need to go back in time and grow a penis, then go to Harvard.
It's becoming painfully obvious lately that Conan has no female writers. Well, he's always done this but only in the past couple of years has it really started annoying me. Last night, top of the show: Kirstie Alley fat joke! Oh really, Conan? WTF? He's a smart and funny guy, and I don't know why his writing staff keeps relying on lazy fat jokes or "Larry King is old" jokes. Did one of them get rejected by Kirstie Alley for prom or something? It's really fuckin' old already.
I think Jezebel should produce its own late-night show. Call it The Vagina Hour.
Come ON, ladies. Have a sense of humor. Can't you see that the near absence of women in comedy writing jobs is hilarious? Sheesh. Comedy shows are just engaging in one of those Family Guy-style laugh fests where they make fun of sexism/racism by doing or saying something sexist or racist. It just has a really long set-up. But man, when you hear the punch line, you're gonna laugh so hard you jizz in your pants. Er. Something. #davidletterman
I have recurring dreams that I discover that I've been hired to write for a big funny comedy show, and then I get to the comedy show and they see me and decide that since now they have a woman writing, they need to turn the show into a soap opera. #davidletterman
"Guess how many female writers" is a fun game, but a short one. If you want something that'll occupy you for hours try "Count the white dudes." It's the monopoly of workplace oppression games. Never ends. Sometimes I play it to put myself to sleep. By the time I get to eleventy-five I'm out like a light (Did I mention I'm a girl and therefore can't count?) #davidletterman
But how are comedy writers supposed to be able to skate up to the line of appropriate content without the freedom to speculate about the size of Salma Hayek's rack?
Once we ban sexism from the writer's room, what next? What next, I ask you? #davidletterman
Something that reeeeeeeeeeeally annoys me about 30 Rock: Tina Fey and Liz Lemon both go on about women in comedy and all that jazz, but how many female writers are depicted on the show? 1? Do we know her name. Nope. Background character. Way to bring some chicks up with you, "Liz." #davidletterman
@LaComtesse: The character you're thinking of's name is Sue LaRoche-Van Der Hoot, and there have been at least two other female writers on the show that I can recall.
And why should the creators of 30 Rock feel obligated to paint a picture of comedy writing that isn't accurate? Sure, the show on the whole is cartoonishly exaggerated, but all the TV production stuff is fairly realistic from my experience. #davidletterman
@LaComtesse: There are two (or at least used to be, now I only see the blond-haired one) and it is funny/sad to see how far they stretch to get her to react to situations without ever having a line. If she hadn't spoken a single word a few seasons back, I'd assume she was mute. #davidletterman
@LaComtesse: But she has tons of personality! Didn't you see how proud she was to show off her bra? Not every character on a show can be the lead - there's a lot of comedy to be found in quirky glimpses of background characters.
Calling her "girl writer" was the same kind of wry humor that got us a character named "Twofer." Are you really offended by sexism even in characters that were created to poke fun at that sexism? #davidletterman
As someone who is routinely told that I am the funniest GIRL they know by men (women don't qualify me for some reason), I can understand this phenomenom. men don't think women are funny. And when they do, it's considered the exception.
In law school, I wrote most of the skits/monologues for our annual comedy show and people thought my work was hilarious. Law school is a SUPER tough crowd. But the men were like "holy crap! You were really funny! It was so surprising how good of a comedy writer you are!" Yes, this vagina of mine is a real downer.
What's shocking is that most of my girl friends are hilarious. And Smart. SHOCKING. #davidletterman
@JinxyMcDeath: Wait, are you me? I get the exact same thing: Funniest woman certain men have ever known, wrote most of the skits in the law school comedy show, most of my girlfriends are hilarious and smart. It's amazing the world can contain both of us. #davidletterman
What a shock that Letterman has zero female writers. I really was expecting many women writers after all those "zingers" directed at Bristol Palins womb last summer.
@PilgrimSoul: we're all so humorless! Also did you know its cool to direct misogyny towards women who have mothers who disagree with you politically? #davidletterman
@bluebears: No, but once you become part of the limelight, it becomes alright for the late night talk show hosts to make fun of you. I don't see you crying foul when they all makae fun of EVERY OTHER politician. Especially the ones who get caught in sex scandals. #davidletterman
@Ingenium: oh I guess I missed it when Bristol and Willow Palin became politicians. I also missed the "sex scandal" involved. All I saw was a teenage girl who became pregnant. #davidletterman
Shocking that those who shape America's brand of humor are a bunch of (white) dudes! The only one on this list that I consistently tune in for is Chelsea Lately. The fact that she's on cable plus the variety of types of humor she has on her show keep it fresh and irreverant. I'm voting with my little piece of the ratings.
Also, loved the Tobey MacGuire quote but would like to add to what he said that we could also stand to support the families of the people who go away to fight a little more too. They are the ones who take on the burden of responsibility for the emotional health of troops, and are the ones who suffer with the damage to their loved ones.
If I never have to hear another sneering nasty remark about how all soldier's wives are whores who can't wait for their men to go away so they can slut it up... well I just don't think that will happen. #lindsaylohangerardbutler
Whoa, Callista Flockheart being interviewed about the dancing baby on Ally McBeal? Did they also ask her about the information superhighway that all the kids are talking about these days? #lindsaylohangerardbutler
Dear Emily Blunt: History can and should be interesting, not dry facts. Sorry if you had a bad history teacher, but please don't tell me your movie is OMGSOCOOL when it IS, in fact, based on Victoria's life. #lindsaylohangerardbutler
@bitchyolympian: I think she's referring to the fact that the movie is really not about the turbulent politics of the time. The film's focus is Victoria-- the teenage girl, transitioning to her as woman and as a side note, the queen she becomes.
But yeah, I'm a history major. It's not boring people :o). The movie is amazing-- I can't wait to see it in theaters. #lindsaylohangerardbutler
