I've ignored all other non-sense about Santa not being real for the past 2 decades... But, if the Gosselin kids say so... I guess I won't be putting out my Santa trap this year..

I can't remember ever believing in Santa Claus. I do remember many years of pretending to believe in Santa Claus. I was the youngest of many cousins, and my family seemed to get such joy out of thinking I believed, that I couldn't let them down. I don't think I broke the news to my mom until I was 10.

Oh good, tabloid updates on the kids. This is way less exploitative than that show for sure. Let's blame this on the parents too.

You know, I feel like I must settle this debate. SANTA IS A REAL PERSON: [www.catholic.org]
(whatever you make of that historical figure, his legends, miracles, artistic renderings, etc. it's up to you :-) )

I heard they put two and two together when they realized Santa doesn't wear red Ed Hardy suits, Mrs. Claus isn't 23 and toys don't usually smell like Axe body spray.

I'm Jewish, and therefore never believed in Santa. But my father remarried a woman who is Christian and we always spent the winter holiday with them. That meant spending Christmas day with her family, and getting a stocking and gifts from Santa Claus. It's funny because I never believed in Santa, but I enjoyed pretending he was real even though it wasn't my holiday. I always assumed it was that way for all kids. Until my little brother went up to my stepmother (his mother) out of the blue one day and said "Mom, you're the Easter Bunny, aren't you. And I think you're Santa Claus too."

My aunt would not let her 3 kids (my cousins) believe in Santa Claus because she thought it corrupted the true meaning of Christmas (Southern Baptist, if you had to guess). So while the rest of my 20 cousins are hovering around the window, looking up at the night sky wondering when Santa was going to come, they were in the other room crying to our grandmother who was forbidden to reassure them that Santa Claus was indeed real. So sad.

Bottom line: don't ruin childish wonderment. It dissappears soon enough!!

@curiousgeorgiana: You realize there are plenty of children who have never heard of or have never believed in Santa Claus for one reason or another, right?

@KitPorter: Yes, I do. My comment was relating to members of my family. A family which as a whole, celebrated the idea of Santa. As a result, these 3 children were left out of a family tradition and told that something they wanted to believe in, did not exist.

If you don't have an concept of Santa Claus, then it's not a tragedy to be told he doesn't exist.

@curiousgeorgiana: That IS bizarre, seeing that you're in all in the same family. What I can't figure out is why the heck your aunt allowed your cousins were allowed to be over there in the first place. That's almost salt-in-wound cruel.

While I was not That Kid, I was oddly friends with several That Kids and had my belief in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus crushed by the savvier minds in my class. I did get over it, though, so I think they'll all be fine.

This is what happens when Santa's newest "special elf" buys him Axe body spray and gets him a custom made Ed Hardy Santa suit. Meanwhile, Mrs. Claus is too busy giving interviews to the PoleSTAR to really pay any attention.

    Merry Christmas!

And then at the other end of the spectrum, you have my youngest brother. We older kids had the fear of God put into us by our parents that we were never to tell him Santa is Your Mum and Dad, and we took that seriously, so seriously we prevented other people from telling him. The years went by. And then he came home in tears in SIXTH GRADE because not only had he found out Santa wasn't real, but all the other kids made fun of him. So maybe getting that bubble burst at a young age isn't the worst thing...(though the sextuplets are a little young...)

@Triphena: My cousin was 15 when he found out, and he told his mother she was lying or a while first.

My brother and I were 14 and 12 respectively. I love Christmas. Those kids are way too young to not believe in Santa.

@Triphena: I found out when I was about 4 or 5 and my brother when he was about 2. We caught our mom putting presents under the tree on Christmas Eve and since she didn't believe in lying to us, she told us the truth.

Every Christmas since then has been boring.
