I guess I could see it. It seems sort of pointless though, because isn't the actual Kennedy assassination supposed to be going down this season? So why the need for the complex foreshadowing? Seems like overkill. (pardon the pun)
@Maritsa: Correct, she's getting married Nov 23, 1963 and the assassination was the 22nd. I know since I was reminded of this by EVERYONE over 40 when I got married on Nov 22nd last year.
right. Plus, it's not like the audience doesn't know whats coming...It just seems like foreshadowing to no purpose. Whereas the story about the deceased father who lost an arm? Good foreshadowing. Or showing the invitation with the date of the wedding. We all know whats coming and that was more like a little wink at the audience. But this seems like, again, overkill.
Unfortunately, I can't get Pandagon to load, but there was another image in the episode that made me think of the JFK assassination. I didn't even notice the secretary's pink dress, probably because, at the time, I wasn't expecting the carnage that followed. The image that floored me was of Joan at the hospital later, her dress covered in blood. I couldn't help but think of the picture of Jackie Kennedy while LBJ was being sworn in, still wearing the same blood-covered dress.
Oh god, I'm not even remotely squeamish and still I sat bolt upright with my jaw agape, clutching my boyfriend's knee with all my might when this happened.
I second the Vietnam imagery in this one, as opposed to the JFK foreshadowing.
@Clare116: I don't think she'll get fired--I think Kenny will. He said off-handedly "I claim full responsibility." Not a wise decision when people are looking for blame and there you're in competition with another capable person for one position that's currently two.
@katie.scarlett.o'hara: He brought in the Deere account...that means he introduced the mechanism of destruction into the office!
There is NO way they could get rid of Ken. Pete as the sole head of accounts? Lane would find someone else to co-head before he'd let Pete loose on the clients.
In the slate.com conversation (I highly recommend it if you're into MM), they referenced a theory that it was symbolic of the Vietnam War. The guys are chit-chatting about how the draft isn't that big a deal, what's everybody getting excited about, etc.
@LadyNo Fondles Sweaters: That's what I thought while I was watching. It was a nice parallel and showed how removed and privileged those guys are, at least so far.
@LadyNo Fondles Sweaters: Also when they discuss that Guy losing his foot will end his career and essentially his life (as the PPL people see it) is all the more disturbing/poignant when you consider the huge number of young amputees who will be coming home from Vietnam in a couple of years.
@suck_it_monkeys: Like, other men their age will soon be dying brutal deaths in an unjustified war, and the only Mad Men casualty so far is due to ridiculous office antics.
Is anyone else pissed that it was a woman driver? The guy is driving around handling it, and his tipsy passenger nice and easily, and for some reason the chick can't handle a riding lawn mower?
@ArgusRun: It's not any old woman, but Lois. Lois who is notoriously clumsy and is in no way representative of all women. I don't think they were trying to make a point that women can't handle it, in this instance. Especially considering the fact that Joan is shown immediately afterward taking charge of the situation in an incredibly level-headed and efficient manner.
Whether or not this analysis is right - this is part of why I love this show. It makes me feel like I'm back in the cozy bubble of my Liberal Arts college, discussing "weighted imagery" in whatever book we're reading.
If Joan's dress had been pink, I would get it, since she was covered in blood.
But green and red are opposite colors so maybe it was to make the colors stand out against each other.
Can you really foreshadow what you know is already going to happen? It's not really shadowy.

That whole scene was so great. As soon as Lois got on, it was like oh noooooo...something bad is going down. The way they edited it was so scary.

Hmm, if she gets fired, I guess that would open something up at SC if Joan wanted to come back.
