Mellon has worked with Sir Elton John before, and traveled to see the medical center in Cape Town, where she met victims of rape and incest. "One woman at the Simelela centre was sexually abused by a male relation from the age of 13," says Mellon. "She told me how the centre had given her the strength to get her life back. These women are dealing with AIDS, they are dealing with rape, they are dealing with incest. But it really hits you when you see where the money [we've raised] has gone. <![CDATA[Stylista Is Bringing Bitchy Back]]> Stylista, the reality show where contestants compete to be a "junior editor" at Elle, debuted last night, and it was a delightful festival of bitchery. Joe Zee, Elle creative director, told the Observer at the show's premiere party, "We weren't mean to be mean. We were mean because we were being honest." He's practically brimming with "honesty" in this YouTube clip, where he's evaluating each contestant's outfit as Elle-worthy or poopworthy. Sure, it's a low rent reality knock off of The Devil Wears Prada, but it sure is fun!

<![CDATA[Is Nina Garcia's PR Company Using Interns To Promote Her Cause?]]> Though neither Elle nor publisher Hachette Filipacchi nor Nina Garcia will confirm Garcia's having been "let go" from the magazine last week, WWD reports that Garcia hired Rubenstein PR to speak for her. And! A little birdie tells us that Rubenstein has handed off some of the Garcia damage control work to its interns, deploying legions of them to comment on sites like Perez Hilton and TMZ. The minions leave encouraging and kind remarks, complete with stats on Nina's many successes while at Elle in the comments. (Many examples here, here, and here.) Oh, and take a look at this comment from "MakeItWork", in response to Perez's post Elle Vs Nina Vs Project Runway:

The team at Elle is doing something right, if PIB figures are a tell (see previous post 'It's not just newspapers.') And I suspect circulation figures, especially newsstand, were also strong for the same period, which coincides with the end of the last PR cycle.

Not all the work is done in the office especially in high profile positions at a fashion magazine. What seems like a glam lifestyle to many — designer dinners, fashion shows, gala functions — is considered work and has value. Also let's not forget, during the '2 years' cited by the 'insider' (read, one who likely wished their job was to get out to attend the aforementioned) Nina had a baby. Motherhood is very important work, isn't it?

It's doubtful, however, that Rubenstein's interns are responsible for the following comment, left in the same thread:
I actually heard when I worked there, that Nina had slept with Joe Zee not Gilles... wait, wait now I remember... They said Joe Zee loved having trio's [sic] with Nina and Robbie Myers IN THE CLOSET! yes!...and that they walked out with their hands full! Did you spread that stuff you said she did on your fucking tongue or what you bitch! You really hate and envy Nina right?...is it that you are in LOVE with Nina and truth is her popularity kills you!

<![CDATA[Even Fashionistas Rock The Vote]]> While it might be easy enough to assume that the fashion industry has too much on its mind today — what with the opening of the new Gucci flagship on 5th Avenue and the fashion shows of Badgley Mischka, Rodarte, J. Mendel, Matthew Williamson, Behnaz Sarafpour, Tory Burch, and Narcisco Rodriguez — the truth is that politics are, in fact, very much in style. Among fashion designers, loyalties are divided between the two remaining Democrats. While Diane von Furstenberg ("I sincerely believe she's the best candidate"), Donna Karan, and Oscar de la Renta have all maxed out in campaign contributions for Hillary Clinton and Nicole Miller, Marc Jacobs, and Marc Bouwer have also voiced their support for HRC, while Obama has Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein at his sartorial (er, proverbial) side.



The top dogs among fashion magazine editors, however, are a little more tight-lipped about their political leanings, though they seem determined to let the world know that Fashion Week hasn't distracted them from their civic duties. Says Alexis Bryan, executive fashion editor for Vanity Fair: "Yes, of course I am going to vote — 8 a.m. before the Tse presentation. And I'll be voting for Obama — though if Hillary wins, I would be absolutely fine with that." Lesley Jane Seymour of More will be making her way to the polls today as well: "My biggest fashion accessory is going to be my Obama pin." But Elle editor-in-chief Roberta Myers would only proffer a "Yes, [I'm] voting, after I drop off my son at school" and Elizabeth Saltzman, international society editor for Vanity Fair, wouldn't name a candidate (though she does admit that she's going Democratic). And though fashion may have a reputation for being frivolous, no one in the industry would deny that fall trends aren't nearly as exciting as the fact that we'll elect a new president come November. Won't it be a lot more fun to think about clothes when the country isn't going down the drain?
