It's weird, though. Most of my friends and I say Chi-caaah-go, but all of our parents say Chi-caw-go. And the people whose parents have the flatter -a say it the other way...

I've heard that too - the midwestern accent is the preferred accent for newscasters.
I try to avoid saying the word talk whenever possible but I can't avoid the words coffee or broadway

It never ceases to amaze me how such incredibly stupid people such as Blago and Palin can get so far in life.

Please try not to make my mood any darker by mentioning the idea of Alan Keyes being anything other than a patient in a mental institution.

A lot of the motivation here was intense greed. There is the ethics law that goes into effect Jan. 1 and so Blago was under a TIGHT deadline to get his cash locked in before that date and funding limitations go into effect. Even though he knew he was being watched and possibly taped *due to a suspect leak by the Tribune*, he had to move now to get the cash in place and he'd worry about the implications later. He was so fueled by that cash that he thought he get around the charges. I am not sure it was total stupidity - I think he was just so focused on getting the cash, he was blinded to the implications

- Michael Jordan
- Ozzie Guillen
- Oprah
- Lupe Fiasco
- Kanye West
- Cindy Crawford (even though she's from Evanston)
- The Cool Kids, if they split the seat between the two of them and freestyle rapped all of their arguments

Have you ever seen him out? I saw him once, and it ruined him for me.

(ZOMG could you imagine Twista in a Senate debate??? He would completely kick his opponents ass cause they wouldn't even know what he was saying/get a word in edgewise)
Alright. I'm going back to 2004 or whenever it was he was popular

Bozo! He could bring the bucket game with him!
And no, it does not matter that he's dead. This is Chicago, right?

I love the South Side Irish parade! What I do not love is attempting to take public transportation back to Wicker Park afterwards.

The upside: we are accomplishing bipartison things here in the Chicago/Illinois machine. Both Republicans and Democrats are working to make a fuckload of money from things they shouldn't be making money on.
And what of Emil Jones? Something stinks very stinkily about his mad attempts to have his son appointed his replacement in the State Senate (and subsequent personal gunning for the US Senate seat). Recent son-replacing-dad scenarios in this glorious Windy City of ours resulted in a very very smelly situation that led to Todd Stroger to become Cook County Board President. And everyone's really happy with that and the subsequent TEN PERCENT SALES TAX that we all now have to deal with.
AH! Chicago politics! What fun!
Let's just appoint Jennifer Hudson to the Senate and be done with it.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the notion that a people gets the government it deserves. That is surely simplistic and victim-blaming, to no small degree, but in a democracy, there comes a point where the People really should look at what they're doing and own up to what needs to change (not to borrow a catch phrase!)
I've been thinking this particularly about the Bush/Cheney years, but it certainly applies to Chicago and Blagojevich, too.

and the alaska guy sold himself out for junk like a fish sculpture and a massage chair
is this better or worse than other countries where politicos sell themselves out for millions of dollars?

Does it correspond to say, the Marcos in the Philippines, for eg? I'm guessing no.
12/10/08
I disagree with the idea that people always get what they deserve. Sometimes politicians lie, sometimes they're very convincing liars. Sometimes they have whole teams of professional liars making sure that their lies get swallowed.

Speaking of which: I'm sorry that you're out of work, too. Yikes and double yikes. Good luck!

I guess what I really wonder is how we change it.

And in other news: To quote the venerable Chicago radio station WGN from yesterday afternoon: Blagojevich "is not well."
Or, as I've been saying since I read a really lengthy article about him: He's a sociopath!
I mean, clinically, a sociopath. Not stupid, not arrogant -- clinically fucked up in the head.
Apparently some of his close friends agree with me (according to WGN, again), so, you know, when your friends think you're a sociopath? You're probably going to end up in jail.

It says that Obama, among many other Chicago pols, cut Blagojevich off awhile ago ... he wasn't allowed on the podium when the prez-elect kicked off his campaign in '07. Whoever up-thread said that Blagojevich said all this shit, knowing his phone was tapped, on purpose to burn Obama? Never mind the tinfoil hats, looks like that person might have been on to something.
12/10/08
And lo, I apparently lifted it. Here's the relevant quote: "'Privately, a few people who know the governor describe him as a sociopath,'"

BITCH SET ME UP.
Man I hope so.
