Jimmy Carter makes me damn proud to be an (adopted) Georgian, and I love how he is one of the rare men to have become exponentially greater since he left the most powerful elected position in the world.
(And kudos, Jimmy, for leaving the SBC, especially since I know how important faith is to him. Although I'm agnostic, I really admire people who live out their religious values while respecting the values of others - and without trying to force them upon the rest of the world.)

I always really liked this interpretation. I then moved to Texas, started going to a Southern Baptist church, and wound up...agnostic? Apathetic? Something other than Baptist, that's for damn sure.

Interpret that sentence however you please.
And he has phrased exactly why I am no longer religious (after being raised literally in the church, as a preacher's daughter) and joined one of the only religious-affiliated groups I can stand. Hell, I support them whole-heartedly. I just wish that messages of equality and valuing human life were as easy to spread as messages of vitriol and "do this or you're going to hell" seem to be.

And really, are we surprised that this is coming from Jimmy Carter? He is like the epitome of awesomeness. Every time I hear about him he is doing something amazing and wonderful. He provides such a nice counterbalance to the Jerry Falwells of the world.

But, I hold back my hugs for Fernando Henrique. He was a serial cheater during all his 8 of presidency. I don't usualy take issue with public figures private lifes, but this sounds kind of hypocritical of him.

@Bunsen Honeydew: Yay for presidential birthdays! I share mine with Obama.

He has always been a man of conviction and faith, and to see him take this stand, a man of his stature, is a very hopeful sign. Right on, Oresident Carter!
