Later that evening Ms. Mendes was heard to comment that Kate Winslet gets all the good sick kids. "If only I could have two of her kids, I'd be happy."
In Chanel Iman's defense, I'm often asking what day it is. Like when I thought yesterday was Friday. When I found out the truth, I wanted to hide for a while.
Dear Ms. Obama, This is an internet thank-you note for your decision not to wear fur. You are a role model and a fashion icon, so this means a great deal. Plush animals send hugs and kisses. I smile and send happy thoughts in your general direction.
I find it hilarious that the fashion industry keeps trying to change M.O.'s image, which is basically a stylish, utilitarian, working mom into something she's clearly not. I mean, before the presidency, the Obamas were an upper middle class couple in Chicago. Why would an ostensibly upper middle class working woman with small children ever bother wearing fur? And why does the industry suddenly expect her to completely change solely because her husband's job has?
@Trulymadlyme: Eh, when I was growing up (I'm 28), most of the moms I knew would have a full length mink or something for the winter (I grew up in a nice-ish suburb outside of Detroit). It gets cold here, and it was one of those conspicuous consumption bedroom neighborhoods. That being said, that was the 80s/early 90s, and I just don't get the impression the bulky full length fur is a look right now, besides growing awareness of animal welfare. (But re: fashion, what the hell do I know? I'm a "but I'm out of a tshirt/sweatshirt, you mean this isn't fancy? kind of a gal.)
@Laulau: It just doesn't seem practical, mainly. The working women I know in Chicago who have the sort of jobs Michelle Obama did, wouldn't bother with fur because it just isn't practical. Professionally, they tended to go forward the fancy wool/cashmere coats. They tended to be the sort of women working 60 hour weeks, raising kids, fund raising, and yet still being able to make it to spinning everyday. Wearing fur to an office? Not likely.
I haven't wanted to see a movie in a long while, but reading about the O'Keefe film has me positively salivating. I lived in Santa Fe during the early 80's and worked in a gallery part-time for a year. One afternoon she walked in with a couple of assistants. It was a total shock - at that time she hardly left her Ghost Ranch. I found her to be quiet but also warm, gracious and genuine. She asked me some questions and learned I was a musician and had just finished my first recording. A week later I received a note from her mailed to me at work asking for a copy! I still have the note and wouldn't think of ever parting with it.
She was a remarkable woman who was far ahead of her time.
Can I just say to all the Muslim men out there who believe that God gave you a right to beat your wives... why don't you READ the texts?! You are supposed to cherish your wives and treat them like equals! The same way the prophet cherished his wife! *grumbles*
