The Republican response to the whole Nancy Pelosi torture fiasco is indicative of just where this country's head is at. They cannot come up with any substantive or concrete arguments for why she should resign, because to do so would expose their own hypocrisy to the light of day and get people wondering why they didn't do anything. So, not unlike the Emperors of Rome, they give the crowd what they know it wants -- they attack her looks. The problem with that strategy: the mob is fickle. You may please them for now, but eventually they will want more blood, and may pull down your empire to get it.

The Ta-Nehisi Coates thing is just so much awesome. Oh my word! I'm going to be sending that around to a fair number of people today.

"I think this is what makes bigotry so tough to fight. It's not about the limits of empathy--it's the limits of imagination" is one of the smartest things I've read in a long time. (And, by the way, that's why I think that the conversations we have on Jezebel about race are so important. They expand the limits of our imagination exponentially).

(I do wish he hadn't dragged Rush Limbaugh's looks into it -- I don't think that it's helpful to fight misogyny with lookism -- but hey, the rest of it was so great that I'm just going to whistle right past that.)

Ta-Nehisi, they know exactly who votes. It is a lot more fun to complain about things, than to actually doing something about it. Palin loses, they get to complain about the evil, baby-killing, immoral Pinkos, and then they get better ratings/campaign contributions. It is a win-win.

@cake-or-death: No, you're not. It irritates me too, even if it is, on a certain level, very sweet. It reveals such an unthinking lack of faith in young men, and such a lack of faith in young women, and such an antiquated and damaging attitude about young women and sexuality (and sexuality in general -- if we were to stop acting like sex is something that men have to try to "get" from women, we would all be better off).

My own husband has never said any such thing about our daughter. I'm pretty sure he understands that she might want to have sex someday.

(Also, on the strength of your username alone, I find I must friend you. Just the other day, I was teaching my kids to yell "Little Red Cook Book! Little Red Cook Book!")

I agree with a lot of the issues that Pelosi supports, but her presence rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Maybe she should sit out the next couple of plays, dial down the visibility, and let everyone find a new thing to rage on.

Pelosi is a divisive figure, and I think morninggloria was just saying that it might be useful if she back it up a little bit. When Joe Biden messes up, we ask him to sit quietly for a while, too. I'm not sure I agree (not sure I disagree, either!) but I'm just saying that I think this was the intent of the comment.

Like what ellaesther said, she's messing up and her continued presence in the spotlight (for the time being) is just reminding people that they're supposed to be mad at her. For starters, when Joe Biden messes up, he's not ridiculed for his looks. Rush Limbaugh has never said that Joe Biden causes him to have erectile dysfunction. Rush and the boys don't ever seem to judge men on the basis of their looks. How dare Rush Limbaugh talking about how ANYONE looks?

I have no love for Pelosi - but this is some really bad shit the GOP is pulling, and I can't believe my fellow Jezebels are accepting an attack on a woman's LOOKS and telling said woman to go sit in the corner.

@PaintedTrollop: Honestly, although in this example they are ridiculing her looks, Pelosi has been getting a lot of criticism lately that has nothing to do with her looks and everything to do with torture and her support of it. And every time she's opened her mouth lately she seems to have dug herself a little deeper. We need unity right now, there is a lot of shit that the Dems need to get passed.

@PaintedTrollop: I'm not accepting an attack on her looks; in fact, if this were all about her looks, she could confront the ugly, outdated GOP sexism and come out of this smelling like roses. This is about her trustworthiness and her reputation and about torture and her knowledge/non knowledge of it/ lying about it. I don't know where you're getting that I've decided that she should step out of the public eye temporarily because of how she looks.

But until someone takes one for the team and rips out Rush Limbaugh's voice box, we can't change what he's saying. What the party can do is play the political game, like it does with most other politicians that have attracted too much of the ire of the crazies on the right.
