    Rosie O'Donell says screaming get you nowhere. I say it depends on what you scream. I once read that if someone attacks you on the street, the best thing to do is to scream fire as opposed to help. If people think their property might go up in flames they will pay attention. If it is just someone getting attacked on the street outside, many will simply ignore it.

    @counterclockwise would vote for Jed Bartlet: Having now seen Twilight (to my horrified howls of laughter, and thank goodness it was on DVD at a friend's and I could drink to ease the agony) I would be happy to never see the moody vampire boy play anything, ever again. He clearly graduated top of the class from the One-Note School of Acting.

    @Merkin: I watched Twilight completely stoned with some friends. It was awesome! Not the movie, but the fun we had mocking everything about it. I don't remember much besides broody teenagers and strange dialogue.

    Norway takes half your wages in taxes and is in possession of the world's fifth(?) largest oil field. This is how they can afford to give mothers a year of paid maternity leave and fathers half a year of paid paternity leave.


    So, my dear Emma Thompson, I agree with you. I just don't see Americans or Brits ever agreeing to giving half their wages to the state, although I'm personally very very proud to be paying high taxes. I see a direct correlation between high taxes and my quality of life.

    @MilointheMeadow: Canada also gives parents one combined year (to be defined between mom and dad however they like). But no, I don't see the U.S. ever coming even slightly close. At this point, I'm just working for basic civil rights and hoping we can be slightly less dickish. It's an uphill battle.

    @MilointheMeadow: The US government takes 40% of our wages in taxes, and we get what for it? My husband didn't get paternity leave; brought me home from the hospital with a new baby after a very rough c-section, we were living on an island with no friends or family to help - hell, I couldn't even stand up straight to walk. And he was serving the country in the Navy at the time.

    @KittyKitty Texas-is-bigger-than-France Cat: See, I still think the Norwegians have us beat on taxes, though - besides taking home only half of what they earn, there's also a VAT, sales taxes on absolutely everything, property taxes are sky-high, and all the liquor stores are owned by the state too. It's one of the most expensive places to buy alcohol. On top of that, there are still annual federal taxes like in the States.


    It could be that American taxes come close, though - which is why I emphasize their oil. Because before the 70s and the discovery of the offshore industry, it was a reeeeally tough country to live in, from what I'm told.

    @MilointheMeadow: In the UK we have been treated to the edifying sight of Members of Parliament secretly getting the British public to pay for their castle moat to be cleaned out, duck islands to be made for their ponds, a man to come in and replace the lightbulbs in their house, gardeners for their extensive grounds, new drains to be placed under their tennis courts, chandelieres to be cleaned.These same multi millionaires have usually been the very ones demanding a substantial cut in public expenditure and slashing income tax.

    @MilointheMeadow: They have no right to complain full stop. Presumably the backstage passes are gratis anyway. There are a lot of hangers on who have a personal interest in keeping a star hooked on drugs and alcohol. If ever the star became clean and sober the first thing they would probably do would be to drop such low lives.
