Hey. I like Patrick Swayze as much as the next child of the 80's, but using the riderless horse tradition at his memorial service is TACKY AS HELL.
The caparisoned horse is a powerful statement - and an immense honor - that's generally reserved for higher-ranking military funerals and for state funerals (as in presidents and other major officials). This is typical Hollywood BS, taking itself and its denizens FAR too seriously.
Just because you owned a horse doesn't make you eligible for such an honor, just as simply being dead doesn't make you eligible for a plot in Arlington National Cemetery. Really offensive.
@♥ dosido☮: I pretty much think people can do whatever the hell they want at funerals. Who are we to say what traditions should be reserved for "more important" people? Who the hell cares? Let them commemorate a loved one in a way they see fit.
@TheGuvnah: Yeah, you're right. Who cares about hundreds of years of tradition or military honors or anything as stupid as all that? Maybe a 21-gun salute was in order! Or a plot in Arlington!
Honor needs to be earned. This was a classless decision.
And Mrs. SF: this tradition isn't about being a horseman; its a military honor.
@TheGuvnah: Also, WTH is up with your hostility (as well as Mrs. Stephen Fry's)? I commented on something. If you disagree with my comment, do it respectfully.
I don't know what's going on around here lately with pile-ons, but it's getting really Mean Girlsy up in here these days. There used to be room for a diversity of opinion and reasoned debate on this site.
I've been reading Jezebel for quite a while, and I'm really disappointed in the recent quality of interaction. It honestly didn't used to be this way (except with a couple of commenters who were summarily run off for being so douchey).
@♥ dosido☮: That article also points out that the origins of the tradition date back to Khan and also has a Buddhist history. In America it's applied to military funerals, but in general it stands for a well-respected person that can no longer ride on their own. If people felt so strongly about the life of Mr Swayze then this would be an apprpriate honour.
@sleepeatread: He does sound like the perfect jordan catalano stereotype. But ...confession... I actually really like his songs on the twilight soundtrack. Flame away.
Re: Pattinson becoming a rock star too-- God help us! The tweens will destroy us all.
And maybe I've been reading too much, but don't the names Pleasant Bridgewater and Tarino Lightbourne sound like they belong in a Flannery O'Connor story?
Dear Kevin Smith,
I completely agree with you, but am saddened by the fact that you know how silly 39 year old men look with backwards baseball caps. I love you, I love your movies, and I think it's great how you put your family and friends in your hillarious, creative, donkey-fucking, lesbian-baiting, cripple-teasing movies. You have always been the least PC person ever, and for that, I love you. Maybe Silent Bob could put his hat on foward?
I didn't know that about Maggie Smith! She just seems like she'll always be around. There will be an awesome(ly)-bitchy-old-English-lady void in the world if we loose her!
@ZioZio: I know, it's very upsetting. She's such an underrated actor. She's exactly the way I pictured Prof. McGonagall even before the Harry Potter movies were filmed.
Jon Gosselin says Kate's story is, "a total fabrication." He explains, "I've never taken any money out because over 10 years, Kate handled all the banking. Over the past four years of doing the show, we accrued $2,250,000. She says in the past week I took $230,000. I have withdrawn roughly $177,000 over the course of a year, which is less than 10 percent of what we made. That's like my paycheck."
Jon, Jon, Jon, Jon. What part of "total fabrication" do you not understand? It would be a "total fabrication" if you said that you had not taken any money from the account. The fact that you admit to taking money from the account, makes it "partly fabricated" at best. You see how that works? You might want to invest in a good dictionary before you do any more interviews. Just sayin.'
Also get better, Brian! The BSB can't catch a break, can they?
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: Awww, I just watched the video at TMZ and it broke my little heart. I thought Brian was going to burst into tears! Hey, it is not your fault you have the swine flu and had to cancel appearances!
Anne Heche--Good for you, girlie. So many people go on and on about the importance of having a relationship with your parents because they're you're parents. I think it takes a very strong person to recognize a toxic person/relationship and stay clear.
Dear Kate - if you're going to weep on tv about how you have no money to pay your bills, you should probably NOT buy yourself a new diamond ring. It might make you seem selfish, stupid, crass, and materialistic.
@PaintedTrollop: That was my first reaction, but it sounds like she is going to trade in her wedding ring for a less expensive ring that represents her love for her eight children.
@EndangeredRed: Well, then, cash in the ring and put the money in their bank accounts. This is just crass "oh pity meee but see how wonderful I am" theater.
@PaintedTrollop: As much as I do agree with you, I don't think she owes every part of herself to her children. When she said "we talked about it," I took it to mean she and Jon talked about it and decided to exchange the ring in that way. I think that is perfectly acceptable. She shouldn't have to go around in mourning clothes and greasy hair just to prove her children are provided for.
I realize I am spending too much thought on this, but I have always felt some of the Kate-hate has it's roots in the "women should submit and speak when spoken to" camp. Not that criticism of her isn't valid, but if the woman wants to wear a damn ring, I have no issue with that.
@EndangeredRed: I am not suggesting she owes every part of herself to her children - but for fuck's sake, I never bought myself a diamond to represent my love for my daughter. What she really ought to do is put the money into a therapy fund. Those kids are gonna need all the help they can get to recover from the abysmal parenting theyre getting from both of their attention whoring, money grubbing parents.
@PaintedTrollop: I don't know, I'm okay with the ring idea. Changes wig the hell out of children -- subtractions in particular, especially those in constant view. Changing out her wedding ring for a new ring that has a positive association is probably worth the money, because otherwise those kids see her hands every day and think about the missing ring and the missing father.
I know it might sound like psychological claptrap, but weird little things like this make lasting impressions on kids.
@limber: Also, Kate is going through a divorce from a person she pledged to be committed to, and then proceeded to start a family with. Her life and the dynamic of her family is changed, and it seems like she wants to commemorate that. Her wedding ring was sentimental to her, and this seems like a very sweet way to replace it. And it also sounds like this ring may be less expensive than the one she is ditching. Would we really be asking her to pawn her wedding ring, and any valuables she might have if she had just decided to put the ring in her jewelry box instead? Blah blah Kate is horrible mom because she gets regular (awful) haircuts, tans, and doesn't pawn all her jewelry upon divorce. Because upon divorce, a woman's worth can only be proved if she takes a vow of poverty in order to support her kids who already have trust funds. Right...
