Brooke Shield's mother, Terry, exploited her daughter to a degree that is absurd when Brooke was just a baby..as the mother of a beautiful young girl, I can say that Terry is at the receiving end of what most people would call karmic retribution.
@Amy Anomalous: nice. dementia is karmic retribution. so by your analysis of teri shields, people who age have had the time to make mistakes in their life and hurt others, so somehow they deserve dementia?
dementia has various levels, as does alzheimer's. it's shocking that the assisted living center wasn't more thorough, but each of these facilities are different. i have a family member going through this type of care and you would be shocked - SHOCKED - at the drastic differences in care from facility to facility...and outward appearances honestly have nothing to do with it. all the fancy furniture in the lobby has nothing to do with the high turnover of nurses, the completely clueless social workers, the aides who are more concerned about their cigarette break and get pissed off at family members visiting the patients and noticing the crappy care they are giving their loved ones. oh, and if you ever hear a nurse or aide say "let me do my job", it's a very bad sign and take your loved one out of there.
brooke should sue that care facility for every single last dime they have....and i hope they get shut down. if that can happen to brooke shields' mother, then what's to say it wouldn't happen to someone else's parent?
i had no idea Brooke Shields' mother suffers from dementia/Alzheimers. i remember her as a strong vibrant woman who was always by her daughter's side. Yes, they went to Studio 54, but you better believe that Brooke didn't partake in any party favors. Missteps were made to be sure (Pretty Baby anyone?) but Brooke has an amazing career and then went to Princeton - I have to believe Teri was instrumental in that. It is heartbreaking that the woman who raised Brooke is just a shell of herself. And now that Brooke has little ones how hard must it be for her not to have her mother to share her experience with.
@electrogeek77: I LOLd so hard when I read that comment from him - come on, he has to be doing that on purpose, right? No one can be that stupid and self-unaware.
@porto-hottie: Maybe a side effect of the treatments he is alleged to have undergone to make his skin lighter? I'd imagine anything with that kind of bleaching ability would be pretty toxic.
Okay, I'm really mad about Brooke Shields's mother, but I think that's pretty much been covered.
Instead I'll just say that I am SO excited for Where the Wild Things Are! Every time I look at stills from it they make me so happy. It looks beautifully shot, and I'm thrilled that they used puppets from Jim Henson's shop.
@kelsium: Seriously. It looks amazing and I cannot wait. Also, I will so be part of his focus group if Spike Jonze come to my house with the mask on. I'll let him wear it as long as he wants!
Goddammit Gwen Stefani, shut up! Why does she speak about Anaheim like that? Is Anaheim a spectacularly war torn part of Orange County and I was just not aware? Is Disneyland's hometown really so desolate and sad that no dreams come true?
@seejanerun: I think it was more of a "Hey, we were just some kids playing music in a garage and now look at us!" statement and not a stab at her hometown.
Oh, man. I have a feeling I am going to be seriously angry about this movie about a "mental institution."
First of all, they don't exist anymore, and second of all, I seriously doubt this is going to portray mental illness in any sort of realistic or sensitive way.
Sorry, I work for an anti-stigma mental health research center and shit like this gets my blood boiling.
@FashionShowAtLunch: What are you talking about that mental institutions no longer exist?? Of course they do. My brother worked at one this past summer for an internship. Are you trying to say that they are now usually called a "mental health facility/hospital" or "in-patient mental health treatment center" or something more PC like that?
There are psychiatric hospitals and psychiatric wards in hospitals, but there are no longer "institutions" where people are locked up for years and years. People can be legally "institutionalized", but it's not like "Girl, Interrupted" anymore. In fact, they're even phasing out state hospitals where people are traditionally treated for long-term care.
It's not about being "PC". It's about being correct. And "mental institution" is not only incorrect but has bad connotations.
@FashionShowAtLunch: Have you read John Darnielle's book? It's one of the 33 1/3 series, and it's technically about Black Sabbath's Master of Reality, but it's honestly the most accurate portrayal of what being in a psychiatric ward that I have seen. I actually went to a reading he did of it, and was near tears at how real it was.
@MyNameIsChris: Well, my presumption is based both on the fact that I didn't read the nyt article about it, and also on the fact that I can't imagine Miss Hudgens in a period piece. My point still stands that I seriously doubt it will be an accurate portrayal of mental illness.
I can't comment on the theft of Brooke's poor mom. If I do, I'm afraid that a torrent of blood will gush from my eyeballs and I'll exsanguinate myself. So. Anyway. Vanessa Hudgens: I'm sorry, doll, but even your name makes me stabby.
I have nothing nice to say so I'm just gonna stop.
@..now it's just Aesop's Foibles.: I too am so furious about that story I don't even know where to start. Instead I will congratulate you on the best use of exsanguinate I've seen in a long time.
How does anybody who works in celebrity media sleep at night? I'm sorry, but no amount of money justifies taking advantage of a sick person. They all most be servants of the Wyrm. That is the only logical explanation.
(And yes, I just made a Werewolf: The Apocalypse reference. What of it?)
@vulcanized: I played a Black Fury Ahroun in a game in high school. She was one badass lady. In completely unrelated news, I was a bit of a dork in high school :)
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: Not disagreeing with you necessarily, but when worrying about people who shouldn't be sleeping at night, I'm more concerned with, say, health-insurance lobbyists, investment bankers, proponents of torture, racists, child-abusers. The pain and sufferering of celebrities? Meh.
@ihateyourescalade: But it is not just the pain and suffering of celebrities. In this case, it is a family member of a celebrity who can't take care of herself. Not to mention that the celebrity media commodifies beauty and sexuality and sets an insane beauty standard that no one can live up to (just take a look at any of the beach bodies article, Dr. Rey's casebook, or any of the many articles that called Britney fat). I think that attitude hurts everyone. And celebrity journalism has influenced serious journalism as well. Politicians are being followed by the paps and reporters are asking Obama about his favorite sports teams instead of question about the economy and torture.
And just for record, I often wonder how lobbyists, investment hankers, proponents of torture, racists, child-abusers, rapists, etc. sleep at night as well. ;)
Poor Ethan Hawke. But of all the problems in Hollywood, a dearth of parts for 30-40 something year old attractive white men is not one of them. I guess Reality Bites was a long time ago.
