And I was feeling guilty about spending $90 yesterday on pretty clearance rack fashions for my trip home next week...

In small doses, it is kawaii.

Still, I couldn't help thinking of the article I read about the Japanese housewife who every day takes out her collection of 200 Teddy Bears and carefully cleans them and then puts them away. (It takes several hours.)

Her husband, an architect who loves Europe....

Is that where he tends to hang out, instead of with his wife?

She's ***36*** years old?!!! She acts like a fucking 4 year old. She looks ridiculous, and it's creepy as hell the way her husband treats her like a spoiled daughter.

I feel like on some level this is at least more honest than charging just as much for outfits now fashionable in the US that make girls look like street urchins from the Great Depression.

i'd love to know how she lives - like, what her home looks like. she lives in japan, after all. it's not like she's got tons of space. if all she does is buy dresses and her parents give them cash for food...that's just a dry cleaning nightmare waiting to happen. or something.

    @screwtapeletters: depression-era chic for a new depression-era!

When my 4 year old daughter used to play Barbie dress up time even she knew she didn't have to pose pigeon-toed to look cute. Then again, her entire dress up box only totaled about $20 from garage sales and not 1k from Diamante.

I majored in Japanese Studies in college and used to live and teach junior high school in Japan. This does not surprise me. When I lived there, the big thing was Japanese teenagers sleeping with older men so they would buy them Louis Vuitton bags. I taught around Tokyo, so I'm sure the excessive materialism was worse there than anywhere else.

I could go on forever about how this stems from the rampant sexism and sexuality in Japan, but I won't. Bottom line is that it is pretty sad.

@Louiso: My sister spent about 3 years living in various cities in Japan. The saddest thing she told me was that often the older men were the fathers of the teenage girl's friends. I.e. If dad gave her pocket money, she wouldn't be prostituting herself with her BFF's dad.

If she doesn't stop spending so much on clothes she'll never have enough for the Barbie Dream Home and Corvette.

It must be strange to be married to someone who is, essentially, a child.

This is why, when I want to wear lots of pink, frothy goodness, I just put on $1000 worth of cupcakes. It's clothing - it's art - it's dinner!

I don't know if it was intentional, but the juxtaposition of the last quote ("I figure it's ok as long as what I am buying is pretty") with the screen grab of those godawful shoes is making me giggle.

You know, I have to say I really admire how the Japanese go all out for fashion. It is such an interesting phenomenon to me, and I wonder why it isn't the same here in the US. Now, my privilege may be showing, but does it have something to do with body type? Or more money for clothes? Or what???

@Vivelafat says Vive La Obama: I'm tapdancing on the edge of generalization, but maybe it has something to do with how concentrated the pop culture is. It's hard to disseminate a trend across all of America that'll appeal to everyone all at once, but in a much smaller country, information moves faster and people experience it much more collectively....

I think this goes the way of the Lolita's. If they're not hurting anyone why should we care or comment on what they wear? It's a little judgey if you ask me.

@AthertonMerriweather: Yeah, this isn't too far removed in concept from the Lolita fashion subculture, which can also be outrageously expensive (but part of the Lolita subculture, from what I've seen, kind of encourages its participants to learn to construct clothing and add their own touches to it, which is better than bad, I guess.)

When Candace Bushnell writes silly escapist screeds about women who routinely blow ridiculous amounts of money on silly designer shit, we giggle at it and call it entertainment. I mean, I don't know if this lady has some kind of addiction or needs to learn about responsible spending or what, but she's not really hurting anyone.
