The store I work at has vets come in and do blood drives every month. The owners dogs donate every other month (they switch off) and actually seem excited when the vets come.

Of course they get a shit ton of kibble to eat while donating so that helps...

This never even occured to me... but wow, I'm glad it exists! I don't have any pets now, but boyfriend and I are planning on eventually (in years) getting a couple of pupsters, and its nice to know that if pups need surgery, they'll be able to get some blood.

OK this is nothing new, tons of animal hospitals do this. Donors save lives, calling this pet worship is beyond wrong. Buying a purse to put your dog in, maybe, but not this. Both my dogs donate regularly and if they ever need a donation its comforting to know it will be there waiting for them.

Is pet ownership really big in Japan? For some reason I didn't think it was. I know Australians have more dogs as pets per person and the U.S. and Western Europe spend billions annually on their pets, but I had never heard anyting about Japan. Interesting.

@pinkyBella: From what I've heard (though of course these are just broad generalizations), the Japanese are actually quite fond of dogs. The problem is that many live in dense urban areas where you can't necessarily keep a dog. But apparently there are services that will rent out Shiba Inus as an hourly thing - which sounds like a terrible idea, but I guess as long as the dogs are well cared for by the company it would be okay. Lord knows my parents' dog would love it if strangers came by regularly to play with her.

I have a friend who got a rescue dog from the pound. The dog is some universal blood-type (for dogs anyways) and he gets free veterinary services for being somewhat "on-call" as a donor. I actually think it's pretty awesome.

My mom used to be a vet tech and when a dog needed a blood transfusion, the vet would use his own dog's blood. Poor thing was their walking blood bank (not really, just occasionally) :-)

@greengrey (raidersofthelostSTAR): My neighbors house is going into foreclosure and they just moved across country this weekend and left their dog in the back yard. I'm not going to be a responsible human being and find help for this dog because there are bigger issues in this world.

Actually, I wish I could be this irresponsible and not care about other living creatures...now I have a dog to care for that isn't even mine!

I had a customer get upset with me because I said I liked dogs better than people. I have never met a dog I didn't like, I've met a lot of people I didn't like. And any dog that has issues? Is that way because of people.
