@CurtCole: Oi! Don't cast aspersions on us Brits. In England we tip 10% in a restaurant for service (sometimes they ask for 12.5%) but nothing in pubs or clubs if we collect the drinks ourselves. Sometimes we might tell the bar tender to have a drink themselves.

@Rare Affinity: No aspersions! You have laws to pay your servers/bartenders living wage, so they don't rely on tips. Some places in the US, servers work for $2/hr plus tips, or, I think in some states, ONLY tips.

@CurtCole: the tip is included in the bill in the UK although you can choose to tip on top of that if you want to. I know that a lot of US waiters I know have suggested that Brits are bad tippers in the US because they're not used to the idea of tipping over 12.5 per cent. This tends to engender over-tipping guilt in me which means that i am always financially screwed and shouldn't be allowed to eat out really.

@CurtCole: I split my time between the UK and North America, and I know that sometimes when you're tired or bleary or three sheets to the wind, it's easy to forget which rules apply where. In England, a 15% tip would be extraordinarily generous.

@Rare Affinity: My little trick for tipping is taking the tax on the bill and doubling it. Because tax in NY is 8.65% or something like that. So times two its like 18%. But maybe that's only NY, so maybe just don't listen to me at all haha

@emilyanne:In England, sometimes you have to check that service is already included in the bill. Otherwise some underhand restaurants charge you for service and then leave space on the bill for a tip, which is supposed to be just for service received. I have only once been in a situation when we did not leave a tip because the service was so dire and potentially dangerous (we asked for dairy free dishes for a friend and they were served risotto with cream). The waiter called the manager and we had an argument even though we were perfectly within our rights NOT to pay for service.

@Rare Affinity: This is an interesting story. I've noticed that in England people complain about service less than in North America. In Canada, you would have asked to speak to the manager to complain about the service, and you probably would have gotten and apology and at least some kind of discount on the meal, not just the service.

On the other hand, I find that not tipping in North America is a terrible way to express your displeasure, because servers will just assume that you are cheap.

@emilyanne: I am actually a chronic over-tipper. There is a reason for this! I tend to frequent a lot of dive restaurants and I figure if you're working at the Waffle House at 11 pm, you could probably use $5 on a $15 tab. I tend to get excellent service at the Waffle House as a result.

@CurtCole: Personally I think it would be great if US servers were paid an actual wage and the gratuity was included in the price of the food. When I was waiting tables, there was no widespread use of the consumer internet, so I can understand past ignorance of tipping customs (even guidebooks can be inconsistent). However, in this day and age when you can access customs of each country at your fingertips in two seconds, there's just no excuse for not brushing up on local tipping before you hop on the plane...that's just laziness.

@Rare Affinity: Actually the standard is 20% these days (I usually just keep in mind 5 on 25 is fair and extrapolate from there) Also most servers have to tip out the bartender, bus boy, food runner, and/or host, at least in the nicer places. So really if you tip less than that they're kind of screwed (speaking from serving experience).

@CurtCole: I don't tip at all, and I'm American. Perhaps this is the final reason I should move to the UK (since I've been debating going to university there).

Granted, my way of thinking is, they deserve a tip for going above and beyond, not for doing their jobs. No offense to any waiters/waitresses out there- I was one for two weeks- but if you aren't giving me incredible service, why should I give you extra money? Minimum wage here is 8.55$.

@starryeyedkid: Minimum wage in a lot of places (CA excluded I think) does not extend to waitstaff. If you live in a place where it doesn't, your server is getting $2/hr for the pleasure of serving you. Not tipping isn't cool...

@Rare Affinity: Ten percent of the bill which is easy to figure out 25.35 is 2.53 and then half of that which is a dollar and a quarter roughly. Add the two together and you get around three dollars and eighty cents and I'm always nice and just round things up to the nearest dollar which makes it an even four dollars.

@starryeyedkid: I was consistently paid nothing in various states for waitressing or paid less than minimum wage because it was assumed that my tips would make up for essentially not being paid. If you were to be a regular in my restaurant, I would not serve you. I did that with certain customers. I refused to take their table. Why should I serve you when I have people that are willing to tip me waiting for my service? In this instance, you get what you pay for.

@Elizabth_Bennet: This is so true. 20% is standard because of tipping out other people. Though, I would usually give them a percentage of my tips for the night. Like, i made 40 in tips, I gave the bus boy 20% or something.

@CurtCole: Well, everybody really does hate a non-tipper. Give me great service, I'll give you a tip. That's how it goes. Give me the service you were hired to give me, and I won't be tipping you. In my mind, that's how it goes. When I eat out with friends, they always tip, even if our server was awful. I don't get it. Well, I understand if they're getting paid 2$/hr, but I'm thinking at Red Robin or Blue C. Sushi, they aren't. If I knew beforehand my server was making next-to-nothing, I'd probably tip, but I don't know that upon entering a restaurant.
must add: according to the info looked up, WA does not allow tip to count towards minimum wage. Therefore, legally, the wait staff in restaurants I go to are, indeed, making at least 8.55$ an hour. Go homestate for having the highest minimum wage in the US.

@starryeyedkid: Actually, minimum wage doesn't apply to restaurant staff. At the restaurant where I work, they make $2.38 an hour, the legal minimum in our state. Tips are not optional in the US, as you the consumer are paying the waitstaff, rather than the restaurant.

@cstar: From my cursory googling it looks like servers do make minimum in WA.
People who work at McDonald's make minimum wage. Really no difference between their skill sets (which are still difficult) and a fine dining server? You should just confine yourself to the drive-thru.
Still, why not just eat at home if you can't afford to tip? If you are fundamentally opposed to it you should tell your server before you order. It always amazes me that people can be so stingy at restaurants and trot out the most ridiculous conditionsw before a 15% tip. Extraordinary service? What, like deliver your kid between courses? Serving and restaurant work are honourable careers. The above attitude contributes to the absolute paucity of a respected service culture. And no offense - but have you ever worked for minimum wage? The LEAST amount of money your employer can pay you by law? Try to live off it as an adult. I dare you. So lighten the fuck up and stay home to eat - or yeah, move to the UK.
