Believed to have been born Margaret Ann Bulkley in Ireland, Barry enrolled in med school under her uncle's name and went on to become a high-ranking medical office, a pioneer in sanitary surgerr and the first British surgeon to successfully perform a C-section. Although she is believed to have borne a child, it seems Barry kept the deception up until her death at 70, when a charwoman is said to have exclaimed, 'The devil, a general! It's a woman.
