@envirodesigner: evenmore comforting, the million books are just the orders from bookstores. there's still time to see the figures on returns of unsold copies. maybe.
...Women report experiencing headaches more often than men ... God, that sums up just about everything, doesn't it? I nearly burst out laughing when I read that line.
@curiousgeorgiana: YAY! You know, I would love to see a Jezebel article discussing race relations and gay marriage. I say this because the two dissenting votes here in D.C. were cast by representatives from minority areas (7 and 8) who said that they were pushed by ministers and their constituents to vote against it.
I believe there was some talk about it when Prop 8 passed but I don't remember whether there was a real discussion about it. Correct me if I am wrong.
@Zombies make the heart grow fonder: Here's an article from today's WaPo that talks about how religious and generational influences divide DC African-Americans on the gay marriage issue and whether its worthy of comparison to the civil rights movement: [www.washingtonpost.com]
@tobesthewonderdog: His statement directed at gay and lesbian residents of DC:
"It's not fair to make this one issue a litmus test as to one's commitment to human rights, to justice, and I resent those who would make it a litmus test."
I highly suggest people read the BBC link, there is a lot of interesting info there.
- 1 in 10 men admitted to being raped by another men, but only 3% of men admitted to raping another man. - 73% of those who admitted to rape had committed their first assault before age 20, 5% admitted to raping someone in the last year.
How do I feel about this? Well, for starters this research was released here in South Africa without a blip. I remember when Charlize Theron did an anti rape campaign a few years back- Couldn't get the men to shut up then. Seems rape is a " women's problem".
To clarify, I find it depressing that the only time that South African men appeared to voice any sort of opinion on rape and rape culture is when they felt Theron had "insulted their manhood"
@Whiskey and Popcorn: Not at all the point of your comment, but as somebody else pointed out once upon a time "it's not a women's problem, it's half the worlds population problem"*
*If you believe that it's a women's problem, which I don't
This came up a few days ago, and the ladies from South Africa (can't remember their commenter's names) said that it's not a big deal as it is portrayed. Anyone from SA now to enlighten us on this?
@thesciencegirl: I wonder this all the time. If 1 in 4 women in this country is a victim of sexual assault, how many men are guilty of COMMITTING sexual assault? I know there are repeat offenders, but still, the number's gotta be up there.
"the woman had dressed provocatively, in a traditional wrap-around kanga, and that it was against Zulu culture for a man to leave a sexually aroused woman unsatisfied"
I'm pretty sure she was more satisfied before you assaulted her, motherfucker.
This statistic really makes me want to cry, even though I imagine it's much worse than purported. I wonder what a similar survey here would say? Right. Most rapists probably wouldn't admit to it, even if it was anonymously.

Passed by a vote of 11-2. Should be noted that Marion Barry was a dissenting vote. I will be so happy to see that man disappear from public life.
Now Archdiocese-- don't be assholes and withdraw your social services. The people still need the support you provide.
