i don't know how related this is - but nokia (the seemingly innocuous phone company as it's known to americans) - both beefed up infrastructure in iran (and other developing nations) and sold the government the technology to monitor, track, and intercept the mobile and internet technology of its citizens.
talk about a double edged sword. they give the people the means to communicate, but also enable the gov't repressing that communication.
the u.s. has the same technologies, but its applications don't determine how much or if we're able to communicate within or to people outside of the nation.
