I honestly think the Internet is both the greatest and most terrible invention of humankind. Modern medicine, vaccines, all those are incredible. Guns and the A-bomb are awful. The Internet, however, is both of those things. What else compares?

@femaledwightschrute: Thank you. People would never speak to a waiter the way I see people speak to bloggers. Especially on this site. I think Tracie gets it worse than anyone. Writers on an internet site get paid a salary by someone else and yet commenters come on and bitch and tell them how to do their job as if it was at all appropriate, interesting or useful. I mean in any job yes the consumer or customer is important, but that doesn't mean they aren't assholes.

@seejanerun and the rest: Good points all. But when you write a personal blog and enable comments, you invite commentary and criticism which, considering the cretins that troll the internet, may very well be negative and quite harsh. I certainly am not in favor of such criticism, but it's akin to celebrities who complain about the paparazzi. Comes with the territory.

@seejanerun: I agree with the general sentiment, but I think 1. this site is not even close to how badly people on the internet treat bloggers and others, 2. some of the things the editors/writers on this site do are deserving of some criticism, and 3. this site is not the same thing as a restaurant because here, they're trying to foster some sort of community, encouraging a guided conversation that starts with the posters but then develops from there. I really don't see a problem 99% of the time here. Other sites, on the other hand, not so much. You mentioned Tracie--yes, she might get crap, but she sure does give a lot of crap too. I don't really see too many of the emails they get but they still get to have the last laugh with the crap email from a dude or by posting the email and then mocking it. Point being, I do think it's insane how mean people get online, and I hate when that meanness ends up drowning out everyone else, but this is a unique environment and you can't expect people to never criticize what happens.

One of the reasons I prefer this site to others is precisely because it is much more civil. I don't think it's perfect and I think there could be some improvements (starting with taking criticism a little better), and I'm by far a model of anything close to perfection, but I hope that I can continue to be a part of a community that encourages people to speak up, to oppose things that need opposing, even if those things come from the editors or other commenters, but to do so in a constructive and civil manner.

@twisted_martini: I'm not sure what you refer to besides this, but this did not complain about commenters generally; it was a comment on the asshole, mindless fuckwads who hijack any real chance at dialogue, or whose sole interest in life is to try to make other people feel like shit about themselves. Big difference.

@remedios: I love this comment. It is a perfect example of how commenting can be civil and effective. One of the reasons I love Jezebel is because the commenters are almost always very civilized and constructive if they have complaints. One of the reasons I've become disappointed with Jezebel lately is because, like you mentioned, they don't take legit criticism very well (the replies are usually OMG IT WAS A JOKE U GUYZ!!!1 or I'M AN EDITOR SO WHAT I SAY IS INFALLABLE OK???). Not to mention the bullshit starring system, where it's totally arbitrary whose comments are more worthy than others? But from what I understand that wasn't really a Jezebel decision, but I and many other would appreciate it if they didn't keep on defending it like it was somehow a good idea. Because guess what? It wasn't. Anyway.

I think Tracie's posts are a good example--a lot of the time I'll see people who disagree with what she says, but there isn't any of the ad hominem attacks you'd see on other websites here. Instead, Jezzies will bring up legitimate concerns and use them as a springboard for a more broad discussion about gender performance, stereotyping, etc. And, because of the impersonal nature of the criticism here, people don't usually carry grudges and get unnecessarily aggressive on other posts by the same author or commenter. Ex: I got pretty annoyed by one of the recent posts by Tracie, but this one I thought was hilarious and really well done. I think Tracie is really smart and probably an awesome person IRL, even though I really disagree with (what I think are) somewhat judgmental comments on sexuality that isn't mainstream or vanilla in Pot Psych. and her posts.

It's too bad that so many people won't even see this comment unless one of the ~enlightened~ starred commenters deigns it worthy enough to be seen without having to reload the page to show hidden threads.
