I've heard of women's history month, but not of this particular holiday. This either shows my clueless ignorance, or else how far behind the U.S. is on some matters.
I am grocery shopping with my family today, nothing spectacular. Later this month, though, my dance troupe is a part of a weekend of performances celebrating women's history month, which should be pretty excellent. I'm particularly excited about this show because our performance is based on traditional dances in honour of Oxum (an beautiful, powerful orisha who reigns over love, intimacy, beauty, wealth and diplomacy). She seems to keep a balance between being strong and powerful and also enjoying some of the more "girly" trappings, which I think a lot of us here do--we'll joke self-deprecatingly about "turning in our feminist card" because we like x, y, and z, but really, it's okay to have a little of everything.
Glad to say I am locked in an office on this glorious day - as miserable as it is - in a profession where we are not yet equal, but we've gained some ground. I will celebrate by showing these dude just how awesome I am and working my ass off.
I want to be grumpy and say every day should be fing womens day...and then I look at the pictures from Pakistan and I feel kind of pleased/relieved. After everything thats been on the news about Pakistan lately, seeing that women can take to the streets for womens day gives me warm fuzzies.
Today is my dad's birthday. He + my mom managed to raise two girls who embrace math and science and are totally willing to stand up to men/the patriarchy.
And now, I know why. He has the power of International Women's Day!
8th of March is taken pretty seriously in Russia - I got a wonderful toy giraffe with bendy legs and neck when I was 9 or so. Today, my brother stopped by with a cake and candy for my mom and granny and I. We're also going to see Watchmen with some friends and the ticket and a Cola is his present to me.
@roscoe: I think that picture is so striking. She looks so very intense, and totally the embodiment of feeling what her sign says. I may actually save it.
Oh god, I totally forgot! That means it's also Annual Pig-Out Day!
My friend and I created the holiday 9 years ago, and every year on IWD, we've been required to pig out on delicious food. Anyone care to celebrate with me?
It is always interesting to see protest/huge gatherings in other counties. It doesn't seem to really happen in the US. I'm glad this day is getting some press even if it is just in other countries.
@Miss Scarlett in the Hall with a Revolver.: When was the last time we actually saw a public protest in USA? I mean, where there were more than 15 people? It's time to beat the apathy and (pacifically) take the streets again!!
@misscreant: I am not going to go all USA is best. But when I lived in Southwest France you didn't walk alone after dark as a woman because it was not uncommon to be followed home. The guys wouldn't do anything, but they felt it was perfectly within their right. So a month after I got there, I got a bicycle. A friend who lived in Italy (florence) said something similar, only the guys would say stuff too. In Ireland (republic of) rapes still go unreported because of the fact that you can't really legally get an abortion, and if you report the rape and they do a pregnancy test (as part of a rape kit) and your preggers, you can't just go to the UK and get it taken care of women used to. So they keep their mouths shut. And we're talking about Western Europe, not the so-called "backwards" developing world/ sarcasm.
In a lot of the countries where International Women's Day gets a much bigger deal, it's because the barriers between the menz and the womenz in terms of equality are still much more visible in very palpable ways.

I saw both the NBC and ABC nightly news, not even a mention of it being International Women's Day.
Sad America, sad.

Use the guts of the Lindt as sauce...regular pizza dough as a base...different flavours of Lindt as toppings. It could be the ultimate dessert pizza!

I am easily swayed. I'm lucky there aren't many cults in my area.

In Russia at least it's no longer a political holiday. It's more like Valentine's Day and Mother's Day rolled into one.
