    I saw both the NBC and ABC nightly news, not even a mention of it being International Women's Day.

    I've heard of women's history month, but not of this particular holiday. This either shows my clueless ignorance, or else how far behind the U.S. is on some matters.


    I am grocery shopping with my family today, nothing spectacular. Later this month, though, my dance troupe is a part of a weekend of performances celebrating women's history month, which should be pretty excellent. I'm particularly excited about this show because our performance is based on traditional dances in honour of Oxum (an beautiful, powerful orisha who reigns over love, intimacy, beauty, wealth and diplomacy). She seems to keep a balance between being strong and powerful and also enjoying some of the more "girly" trappings, which I think a lot of us here do--we'll joke self-deprecatingly about "turning in our feminist card" because we like x, y, and z, but really, it's okay to have a little of everything.

    Glad to say I am locked in an office on this glorious day - as miserable as it is - in a profession where we are not yet equal, but we've gained some ground. I will celebrate by showing these dude just how awesome I am and working my ass off.

    I want to be grumpy and say every day should be fing womens day...and then I look at the pictures from Pakistan and I feel kind of pleased/relieved. After everything thats been on the news about Pakistan lately, seeing that women can take to the streets for womens day gives me warm fuzzies.

    Today is my dad's birthday. He + my mom managed to raise two girls who embrace math and science and are totally willing to stand up to men/the patriarchy.

    8th of March is taken pretty seriously in Russia - I got a wonderful toy giraffe with bendy legs and neck when I was 9 or so. Today, my brother stopped by with a cake and candy for my mom and granny and I. We're also going to see Watchmen with some friends and the ticket and a Cola is his present to me.

    It is always interesting to see protest/huge gatherings in other counties. It doesn't seem to really happen in the US. I'm glad this day is getting some press even if it is just in other countries.
