Please do not look at the nonsense that Beck or Limbaugh spew as actual radical right wing beliefs. They are using this birther, the downfall of America, nationalization of the US as a way to gain more stringent followers and increase their bank accounts. They are horrific humans who have used veiled racist attacks to increase the paranoia already rampant in so many uneducated white men's brains. Immigrants have been the enemy since White people werent Immigrants anymore. US will forever need a boogey man because sadly we are do not work together well enough when we are left to our own devices. But this will backfire, the culture war will backfire and while these are the things make the headlines, I believe that if half of these idiots experience a better health care system, their mouths will be shut.
The culture warriors used a blow job to bring down Clinton because the prosperity he brought to most middle and lower class homes couldnt not be unseen by us. Culture wars work because they fuck with what you think is right. But when it comes to peoples money and prosperity, that will win out in the end.
The Esquire piece points out that there has been an increased amount of polarization in viewpoints, but the crucial difference between people on the far left and people on the far right, that stands to lead to violence, is that their basic platforms respectively boil down to "I am so much fucking better then you," and "I am so fucking scared about what that might mean."
Did all this talk of revolution give anyone else get a frightening flash-forward to a "handmaid's tale" kind of world? Maybe without the handmaids, but you know, where women are uneducated and everything is named after the Bible. ATWOOD WAS RIGHT!! *packs bags for mexico.*
Technically, Hawai'i isn't legally a state or even a territory of the U.S., but when the U.S. stole it then turned it into a state the conservatives didn't argue about it then.
Should Hawai'i be a sovereign nation? Yes. Has the US recognized this? Yes. Are they willing to change anything? No.
That is the absolute sole legitimate claim any birther may be making. Though I think it is null and void since his mom was, you know, AMERICAN.
This is what I wrote on the facebook wall of a birther I went to high school with. Other lawyers: I'm right, aren't I?
"Section 309(c) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act lays out the citizenship status of a child born to unmarried parents. If the US citizen is the unwed mother, she has to have US citizenship at the time of birth AND must have been previously physically present in US or outlying possessions for a continuous period of one year. INA Section 301(g) is the one that states that the residency requirement is five years. There is an exception to 301(g) in 309(c), in which the residency requirement is lowered to only on year, and there does not have to be actual physical presence in the US on the mother's part after the age of 14. That is to say, that single year of continuous residence may have taken place before the mother reached the age of 14. That is to avoid stateless status for a child. And yes, I got this out of my actual physical copy of the INA, not off the internet, or from some talking points."
This is chilling. I'm freaked-the-fuck-out not because of this laughable post-apocalyptic scenario (all brought about, sadly, because a progressive black man is president), but because there are people, out in the open, who legitimately believe this. And not just crazy shut ins or dirty racists from the Appalachians, but elected officials! Nationally syndicated talkshow hosts! People who can sway popular opinion!
I'm getting a gun, but only because I'm starting to get afraid that these conservative nutjobs are going to start looting in the name of "revolution." BULLSHIT.
@randomnessish: Actually, I don't believe for a minute talkshow hosts believe Obama is not a citizen. It just serves their ratings better to feed the nutjobs. Keith Olbermann, on Bill Maher's show, once said that he went on Hannity's show and when the cameras were off, Hannity was a completely different person who pretty much said his on-air persona was a put-on to rile the audience and he didn't really believe half what he spouted. Olbermann said that being a right-wing nutjob for money made Hannity a worse human than someone who honestly believed that shit.
I am close (by birth) to people who actually get together with such figures as Bobby Jindell, Newt Gingrinch, and even G. W. to discuss politics and policy. The amount of cognative dissonance is crazy. I don't know how many times I've heard things along the lines of "Newt said not to worry...Obama's administration is finished" or "We're going to destroy them in the next election. Let's Just hope Obama doesn't destroy us (financially) before then". I think that these guys understand that "The Birthers" and other fringe groups are probably certifiably insane and most def. illogical and hysterical. But, they're banking on mass hysteria to help their own cause or that it will DESTROY support for the Democrat opposition. A very dangerous game. Its really maddening. Some of my relatives are incredibly generous with their wealth - financial help and jobs for down and out friends & acquaintances, helping to pay for health care costs and legal aid of long retired employees, scholarships, foster-children, grants for schools, even environmental conservation efforts, and all without publicizing it or allowing anyone to call them philanthropists. But, just mention Govt Health Care and they freak out like McCarthy and the "Red Scare" , images of the impoverished Soviet Union in their heads. And as an aside, if any of you have never seen the publication, 2nd Freedom, check it out. This thing was in circulation even during the Republican Bush years - CRAZY, CRAZY, CRAZY! I would love to be close to someone with ties to the Democratic Party, so I could know what goes on behind the scenes, at luncheons and stuff, with the higher ups over there. If its anything like the Republicans.....oh, fuck. But it can't be...right? There's got to be a limit to how much crazy can go around?
Wasn't there some controversy about John McCain being born in Panama around primary time? I know it was on a military base, so that for some reason makes it more legit than Hawaii's statehood. But I wonder if McCain had won the election if these people would still be scratching their eyeballs out with rage?
I doubt it.
@kolea: But, but, but his parents were there because of military service in a military base, so it's PATRIOTIC, therefore American citizen.
And I guess also because he's white.
All of this mess, and the militia-types on the birth certificates, gun rights, "socialism," health care, etc... I feel like this is a result of, in large part, 8 years of the Bush administration's 'divide and conquer' strategy. Divide Americans as much as you can on any possible issue, then call the other side un-American and terrorists. And now this is what we have. Scares the crap outa me.
Where are these people coming from? In the past couple of days there have been a few town halls in my state that have drawn hundreds of angry crazies-- despite the fact that the towns they're in only have 200, 300 people apiece, most of whom are surely just normal, sane citizens. So they're getting bussed in from somewhere? Or scuttling out of their backwoods hermit lairs for the first time in years, just to become disoriented and succumb to mania as they squint into the unfamiliar sunlight and are deafened by the roar of these newfangled cars on the highways?
Frank Rich wrote in his most recent article about how lobbyists were hiring "angry townspeople" to wreck havoc on some of the town meetings. He also wrote about the Democrats (those against the idea of universal health care) who have a huge financial loss at stake if they don't ensure the well-being of insurance companies. Money takes precedence over EVERYTHING. Those with the money will do what they can to excite the crazies to ensure the money keeps rolling in.
@freckles: Rachel Maddow has been covering this story-- lobbyist organizations are giving these crazies guidelines for how to disrupt info sessions. Scary as hell.
"Everyone who voted for him ought to leave the country," a customer said.
THE MAJORITY OF THE COUNTRY VOTED FOR OBAMA! YOU ARE THE ODD MAN OUT! Ahem. I voted for Obama twice and I am not going anywhere. This is my country too. The founding fathers set up the US so people could have differing point of views. If you don't like that, then maybe you should be the one to leave the country. You obviously don't get this whole American thing.
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: I agree with you. These people are racist morons.
But.... a majority of Americans did not vote for Obama. A majority of the people who showed up to vote that day, yes. Obama got 69,456,897 votes, and even with a generous voter turnout estimate of 63%, that's still a minority of the estimated 308 Million Americans.
This is exactly the kind of pedantic argument that the birthers love to trot out.
Who is Barry Soetoro? I don't get it.*scratches head* Also Jezebel you need to post some happy stories about your country 'cuz honestly if it wasn't for the rational commenters on this site I would kinda be afraid of and for the US. I hoped things would be better with that idiot out of office but....I'm expecting to see the grand dragon getting a guest anchor spot on Fox wearing a shiny red suit with a little red pointy hat on.
@ZemarSea Urchin: Obama's stepfather's last name was Soetoro, and apparently this makes that his last name as well. Who knew, I guess I should get on changing MY name as well. He went by Barry before he was big in politics so I guess that's where that piece comes from. And yeah, it's kind of weird and scary, I was watching the news last night and there was a poll done in North Carolina and something like 50% of NC republicans don't believe Obama was born here. 12% didn't believe Hawaii was part of the United States! It's truly becoming a confederacy of dunces.
@stacyinbean: Thanks for the information. I could have looked it up but...So I gotta ask is this just media hype or is this a number of citizens with actual power? It scares me to think that a developed and wealthy nation could suddenly implode.
