    Also, one thing I found really interesting in reading up on Saudi Arabia, every single person in that kingdom is fed, clothed, housed, and insured if they need to be. While they are clearly human rights violators to the nth degree, they've got a leg up on a lot of countries in terms of internal issues. Annoys the crap out of me.

    What was I doing when I was eight years old? Hmmm, let's see...watching Saturday morning cartoons, going to Brownies, climbing trees, playing with my puppy...not living in fear of being raped by my husband if my father and said husband decide to amend the "verbal agreement" they have over my future autonomy.

    @stealthird: I'm actually adding this story to my repertoire of examples to back up my statements when I tell people that international human rights law isn't ACTUALLY law.


    (And I'm planning on becoming one of those non-law lawyers, even.)

    @sylie: That was one of the most puzzling things about the International Law class I took. I remember talking to the professor and saying "So the laws exist but no one actually has to follow them...." yeah....

    @saint_just: LOL. Saudi Arabia is a 'dry' country, it's against Islam to drink at all. Some alcohol is illegally imported but is usually hundreds of dollars per bottle. You'd think you'd need a shit load of alcohol to get a father drunk enough to sell his daughter...

    Um, the husband is 58!? So he's going to wait until he's 68 before forcing her to fuck him? What type of father does this? My dad would vom just THINKING about selling me off at 8 to a 58 year old man. I understand cultures that have arranged marriages and even marriages between children (I'm not into it, but we live in a different culture)...but a child and a man? Not ok. Never ok.

    I was just reading about the 10 year old girl in Yemen who successfully divorced her 30 year old husband, and it looks like the reason she was able to get the divorce was because he raped her, which is against the law there in spite of child marriage being legal (they can marry an 8 year old but are supposed to wait to consummate the marriage). Does anyone know if it's the same in Saudi Arabia?
