    People who are good at intelligence tests...are good at taking intelligence tests. I'm all for a new concept of intelligence being defined that accounts for a non type A alpha male approach to intelligence and allows for men to be okay with their emotions.

    @whatsergem: Seriously. I think I've barely scrape a 100 on every 'intelligence' test I've ever taken. And since I'm doing a phd in physics I'm going to say that I might, maybe, be smarter than that. Such tests mean nothing imo.

    @battleaxonista: I am trained in the methodology and administration of phychological tests including intelligence tests and let me just say they are bunk. i wish people would stop lending it as much credence. it really is a crude device, for a whole host of reasons which i won't bore people with.

    One of our family friends is a psychologist who specifically works with testing possible employees for firms. I've done the MBTI test three years ago and the results made me quite uncomfortable because how things are so far =/= what I would have/be in a preferable situation, if that makes sense.

    @Lyesmith: My disclaimer is that I don't work in the field, mostly because I don't like how intelligence tests are used in corporations and schools (the latter I did right after graduating).


    Intelligence is really a culturally defined concept. Most intelligence tests measure intelligence according to the statistical mean validated a set of norms which holds for that population. In most if not all situations, the norm defined is white, middle class, college educated. So thats one aspect.


    Another is that questions on tests are culturally loaded, making transferability difficult across non homegenous groups.


    Intelligence tests measure learned knowledge, and says nothing of learning ability or intelligence potential. It doesn't speak to how non rote knowledge is internalised.


    The MBTI is, if I remember right, a personality test. They obv fall into a different category than IQ tests, but also have a dodgy history somewhat. I think the person who administers a test needs to do proper test feedback. Also, I think its always good to do personality tests at non stressful periods; i.e. not during family trauma or big life changes. A good way to overcome outlier results is to retake tests.
