i sincerely hope she has left the vicinity of the family, hightailed it to an airport and flown back to london. she may need to go into hiding now.
look how many honour killings have occurred in the UK over the last couple of years.
this story is not over yet.

In other cultures the family is the primary unit and one's elders' word is law. Many young people change as they become more westernized for good or ill.
I just know this is part of the reason that fanatical Muslims hate us...this focus on women as separate thinking and choosing individuals.

And, as I said - I'm for arranged marriage, if it's what the people involved want. I think it can lead to successful and happy lives - hell, I've SEEN it lead to happy and successful lives. It's not what I want for me, but if it works for some, that's cool.
I'm not trying to impose my western idea of romantic love on anyone. I'm only concerned when people use their religious or cultural practices as a way to imprison others.

Women have had choice taken away from them. REAL choice. I'm ashamed to say this but my cousin, the psychotic cult member that he is, 'took' a second wife without informing the first or his parents - just rocked up with her one day. First wife was hurt and (I think) wanted out. Her parents basically said to her "well, we can't support you, he is well off...". She's made the 'choice' to stay with him, but ffs, not a real one.

But the whole "marry up to four wives" must be looked at contextually. At the time, men could marry however many they wanted. Plus, the prophet encouraged marriage of divorced women, older women, widowed women. He did so himself (after being in a monogamous relationship with first wife for 25 yrs before she died.) But it seems like today the only time second wives are taken on is when they are younger and to avoid paying the first in a divorce. Bullshit.

I've always wondered if these requirements, combined with the context (as you described) actually make relatively clear that, because its humanly impossible to do this, you better not choose more than one wife.
But then I also think if they (whoever they are) wanted to be absolutely clear on it, they could've said so.

The problem arises when ignorant Muslims think there's no need to strive for higher standards. But only in certain areas. Islam permits slavery but no prominent Muslim thinks we should bring back slavery--we moved on from that. We require a higher standard in humanity. Just like back in the day, Muslims moved behind treating slaves inhumanely. Why can't all Muslims--all people, really--recognize we can require a higher standard in the treatment of women.

I think because control freak guys head's would explode having to think of the Prophet as warrior, leader, sage, ...er prophet and also a man as seemingly comfortable as he was with an independent woman.

On an up note, hooray for the power of international law!

A successful outcome like this is the best publicity possible for the Act and should increase confidence in its effectiveness.

These stories hit too close to home and angers me to the point where I don't think I can make a coherent point. I can just imagine her family sitting there in the wake of this ruling moaning about how corrupted she's become and how the Hindu guy has talked her head over because I've seen this from that side - Its not justice, its sick 'western' values that've encroached on their lifestyle and waaah waah waaah.

Isn't the Muslim arbitration tribunal the same UK group that's trying to get their rulings legally recognized? It seems like it could do some good if their rulings had some legal teeth, but I can well understand the arguments against setting up a second legal system in a country.

You can use the same rhetoric to condone, or at least say "hands off" to FGM, sexism in other societies, all kinds of stuff, you know?

I have to remind myself sometimes that's not the religion but the culutre that's the way. There is nothing in Quran that justifies this kind of behaviour but you can bet that culture does.

She's terrified to tell her parents. I don't think she's expecting anything close to this level of panic or manipulation, but I think I'm starting to get why it makes her really, really nervous.

Congratulations to Dr. Abedin on being strong enough to protest, and to decide for herself what will most benefit her.
12/14/08
That said. Dr. Abedin did not want the marriage so in this case, arranged marriage is unacceptable.
I think people need to watch and consider the cultural context of a story before judging too quickly.

One of my students is in Indian woman whose (very happy) marriage was arranged, and she likes this movie because it shows a sympathetic portrait of arranged marriage that is fairly accurate to her experience. Her parents and his both wanted what was best for their children, and the two of them went into marriage with the same expectations and the same values and strong support from both families.
Arranged marriage would definitely *not* be for me, but it's a good movie for getting an understanding of why some people would choose that road.

And it is nice to see that global intervention on behalf of women works on occasion and seeing a sad story with a happy ending.
