It's called the pink ghetto for a reason...

This came not long after I discovered that we didn't actually give our readers any of the prizes we advertised, we just made up names and the editor took the prizes himself.

I do not understand why people feel entitled in other industries to a handmaiden at the company's expense. It's ludicrous.

There was a lot of yelling and a lot of seeing her naked. Despite her habit of demeaning me at every opportunity, I mostly ended up feeling quite bad for her. Because, yeah, I was making slightly more than minimum wage, but at 19 I had myself more figured out than her 70-something ass ever would.

Maybe.
ALso, my boss is totally one of those insaney-rant ones. I have been the longest office admin/manager/jack of all trades she has ever had. IT is a very weird relationship- some days are gold and some days are horrible. I plan after the revival of our economy to parlay this job into one that pays a LOT more.

One day, when all of us are in the same room, we can open up a nice box of wine and share war stories.

To put it simply--the first one thought that she could "work from home" when the bosses weren't in the office. And when she was stopped from doing that, she called out sick because she had bad cramps.

Plus, she can still call me to fix a fucked up situation, so win-win for her. ;)

I was never an assistant, but I worked in retail. The skill sets are the same: you work with the public. Some people are nice, some are idiots. Some bosses are the same. Still, if you want to see how an industry operates from the inside, being an EA or an admin is the way to do it.

Sorry, didn't mean to get off topic or scoop or anything, but I am excited. So sue me.

You see, this is the fear many executives have. Hell, many people have, period.
If that is your goal, you'd be better off NOT hiring someone straight out of college (which they tend to do anyhow).
Also, if you want to hang onto them. Treat them well. That tends to work.

@BeckySharper: see here's the thing - even in an economic downturn, and even if it means you might have to move to another part of the country, there are jobs where people don't "put up with a lot of abuse". so what makes them think these smart assistants won't be smart enough to walk away from the job?

My first two bosses were legendary assistant-abusers. The one at S&S used to corner me and tell me WAY too many icky stories about her sex life, and also insisted that I bring her coffee every morning from a local deli. She never paid me back for it (this at a time when I was earning $20k a year and could barely afford to feed myself). I used to spit into her coffee--decaf hazelnut, splash of whole milk--sometimes when I couldn't stand it any longer. Also, she had a major drinking problem. Her former assistants have a de-facto "survivor's club" that meets for dinner every now and then.
My second boss was manic depressive and working for her was about what you'd expect. She also used to pressure me into loaning her money and liked to have me ghost-write love letters to the little femmes she developed crushes on.
In both cases I went to HR and complained. In both cases I was told "yes, we know she's tough to work for, but there's nothing we can do."
Let me tell you, I'm REALLY nice to my assistants now.

That's my two cents!

I was an EA, as well as an intern/temp at least six to seven times throughout college) at a number of consumer mags. I was actually an intern at a magazine Coles used to work at, and she was pretty scary. I respected her a lot though. She has awesome journalism chops and she is super smart. She barked at me a few times, but whatevs, I've seen (and been through) worse. What pissed me off the most is when batshit crazy, low-level fashion editors with barely any experience treat you like slaves. I had editors, most probably with mental/emotional disorders, scream at me and even throw things. And I'm pretty competent. After a while I said fuck that noise and went to a under-the-radar trade mag and I'm pretty happy. It ain't worth it.

Switching careers was rough, but much needed. I thank god I did it.
