I've been very distressed to see this turd popping up again. Terry seemed like he had faded away into semi-obscurity for several years, then he made national news by raising the ruckus at Notre Dame for two months before Obama spoke. Now he's grabbing some spotlight again by infiltrating town hall meetings. I'm thinking he's going to hit this hard and heavy for the attention and we won't see another undisturbed THM.
It is horrid to wish evil on another, but I sincerely wish that one of those gun-totin' second amendment crazies who are carrying their weapons openly in front of these meetings would just snap and shoot Terry in the head. Please, put us all out of our misery!
Also, how typical is it that the pro life movement has descended into a dogfight between two dudes over rights to the name Operation Rescue? Thank the good lord above for feminism.
Considering all the ignorant loudmouths who have been allowed to disrupt such meetings lately, I have a lot of respect for what went on in Reston. Granted, this guy is (and should be) considered public enemy number 1, but I am somewhat buoyed by the notion that sane Americans will stop letting their conversations with legislators be hijacked.
@SomeAuthorGirl: That high school is in the county where I grew up! Given the email I received this morning from my aunt in Virginia (about watching Glenn Beck to see what he has to say about our country, gag), I am pleased to see the people of my home state being awesome.
As in any debate there is reasonable disagreement and then there are trolls. My hope is that folks on the pro-choice side of the issue remain mindful of the distinction and respond only to legitimate opposition. When the debate descends into a shouting match between "baby killers" and "clinic bombers" no one gets anywhere.
I know abortion is an emotionally frought issue, but both sides need to resist the urge to feed the trolls.
Operation Rescue's Wichita chapter has now turned its attention to Dr. Carhart in Nebraska, calling him their "No. 1 target." A coalition of groups are gathering this weekend in Omaha this weekend to support and defend Dr. Carhart from the anti-choice goons.
If you're in the area or are able to travel, please try and get there! We need to show the folks at Operation Rescue and in the anti-choice movement that we're just as loud and strong as them and that we're not putting up with their bullshit anymore!
Here's a link to the group that's organized this that has more details if you're interested. In addition to this group, it's also been confirmed that Terry O'Neil, the President of the National Organization for Women, and Ellie Smeal of the Fund for a Feminist Majority will join in.
I'm not surprised Terry is becoming persona non grata. Newman was trying everything to keep Operation Rescue from looking like the bad guys after Dr.Tiller's murder and Terry couldn't have cared less about that. They've clearly been at it for some time now.
Operation Rescue is and will always be a terrible organization with terrible aims. Kicking Terry and his wack-job ideas to the curb won't change that. As long as their intentions are to deprive me and other countless women in this country of our rights to control our own bodies, they will be the enemy.
@EkaterinaBallerina: With any luck, they'll rip each other to shreds and destroy the whole thing from the inside. We won't have to do anything but watch them discredit themselves.
Dear Mr Terry,
Do you realize that your anti-abortion message would actually have some weight to it if you actually did something useful and turned into a reduce-abortion message by doing things? Like sponsoring students in social service programs? Or running a medical clinic that provided birth control and sexual health exams? Or sponsoring a comprehensive sex education program that included the fact that men never have the right to force women (or men) to have sex? Or really, anything besides disrupting mature, adult debate with tantrums.
Thanks,
Sincerely,
Sane People
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: Oh, yes, that should go without saying and should be part of every adoption agency program. Sadly, it isn't standard yet, but hopefully one day soon it will be.
@Sputnik_Sweetheart: This was the most interesting part, for me.
The atmosphere was tense. There were a lot of pro-reform folks but it was unnerving to be surrounded by so many lunatics. I laid low.
@Etoiles: I couldn't believe how many people were there. They had to relocate the event to the gym instead of the auditorium because about 3000 showed up. There were lots of media too. I knew the crazy would be overwhelming but I wanted to experience a town hall because I think it's important for us to see these things in person and report back.
I applaud Jim Moran and Howard Dean for trying. People are just not getting it. It's sad that Americans are so gullible as to believe the tripe the anti-reformers are peddling.
Operation "Rescue" is a sorry excuse for a backward, authoritarian, hypocritical organization. It's persistent attempts to treat religious belief as a "higher power" than civil law, combined with the constant harassment of people seeking help with and other providing abortions, was, is, and always shall be, reprehensible.
@NefariousNewt: Terry has nothing to do with religion. Oh, he thinks he does, but his tactics and personal life give evidence to the contrary. He likes to think he is a prophet but he breaks more commandments than he honors. Randall Terry lives for conflict and is a fame whore of the first degree.
