And then these things happen to remind us that no matter how hard we try, no matter how "white" we act, no matter how assimilated we think we are, someone is still gunning for us. Literally.
Sometimes you want to be able to say something intelligent about it, and sometimes you want to put it in the context of larger history, but most of the time I suspect that us Jews just want our gentile neighbors and friends to hug us and tell us it's okay, and that one day things are bound to change, that they're committed to making them change.
And for such an innocent bystandaer to be the one to take the fall.. it's even worse. We all owe him a huge thanks, as he helped prevent what could have been an unspeakable tragedy.

Yeah. You know those Hebrew prayers you can't understand? They all translate to "Kill Whitey. Amen."

What I need to know, and pretty fucking soon, is that DHS is not afraid to start doing the job they're meant to do. A frightening prospect is that Fox News, Limbaugh, and the rest of their ilk have been doing such a great job of whipping up the craziest fundie elements of their base, while they and their base have watched Administration support shrink away from them. Desperation always equals danger. Is there any connection between that and the events of the last 10 days or so? I don't know.

We all saw this coming.

So we just got finished with 8 years of George W. Bush. During that time, there were a lot of intensely angry people on the left. Yet as far as I know, nobody on the left killed anyone they disagreed with on the right. No televangelists, no gun manufacturers, no talk radio show hosts, no conservative politicians. Not in eight years. I seem to recall a *lot* of people were angry then, too.

This isn't about left versus right, this is about crazy.

I don't doubt that there are crazy people on the left, too--I went to UC Santa Cruz and lived in Berkeley. I don't think it's just that leftist nutballs are less likely to own guns, either. Two murders in two weeks for what appear to be strongly political issues give me pause.

Rest in peace, Mr Brunn. What a waste of a human being...And here I mean the shooter. People who do this shit get their humanity revoked (no death penalty, I just mean they need to start living up their potential and stop wallowing in idiocy.)
I'm a libertarian, I don't like government in general, and I am really fucking creeped out that some of my views overlap with some views of very scary people. But those people tend to be secret racists, or at least massively xenophobic, so I shouldn't feel like they have anything to do with me. But then people (and the government) declare all people who reject federal authority together, and then I feel weird again.

Also, I implore you to not torture yourself, as I have...don't go to Fox and read the comments. When the news first broke about this, they were all "obviously a Muslim did this...thanks, Obama!" Then, they pretended like they didn't go that route and still blamed this on the Administration by claiming this as the "3rd terrorist attack" since Obama has come into office...which really changes everything if we're going to count every single time some fuckhead wingnut shoots someone a "terrorist attack." AND THEN, some had the nerve to say this wasn't news since only 2 people were shot...and then went on to add how the George Tiller murder got all this press because of the liberal bias.
So, I summed it up for you - now don't go to there.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano apologized to veterans after a report issued by her department said troops returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were at risk for being recruited by right-wing extremists.
"To the extent veterans read it as an accusation ... an apology is owed," she said during an on-air interview on FOX News Thursday, a day after veterans' groups and members of Congress blasted her for the report, which they said libeled members of the armed forces.
"This was an assessment, not an accusation," Napolitano continued. "It was limited to extremists those who seek to commit violence within the United States. And all this was meant to do was to give law enforcement what we call 'situational awareness.'"
"The last thing I want to do is offend or castigate all veterans. To the contrary, let's meet and clear the air," she said.
A footnote in the report, "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," said that while there is no specific information that domestic right-wing terrorists are planning acts of violence, such acts could come from unnamed "rightwing extremists" concerned about illegal immigration, abortion, increasing federal power and restrictions on firearms -- and singled out returning war veterans as susceptible to recruitment.

That's pretty much what it sounded to me like she meant, but it wasn't very well worded, and her apology was pretty right on.
