Ooh, I wrote about this for a media studies essay last year. Imani Perry has written some fantastic shit about this subject too; I can't recommend Prophets of the Hood enough!
I love this post and really miss the era of MC Lyte, Missy, Eve, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, etc. in hip hop. Have not seen anyone post this, but I remember this song by Eve so vividly. It is pretty heavy, and yes there is cursing so it may not be NSFW if you have it up too loud.
Jean Grae, Bahamadia...? These lady's are dope too. Damn, the pickings really are slim.
Little Kim is one of the illest, however, it's only her sex-based raps that get play. But the chick is dope. Her last album was majorly clever and totally slept on. Now, she's under hip-hop artist quarantine; her wack-ass label won't pub her or let her release music under a new label. Basically, they're stifling her until her career completely dies...bastards.
I feel that for women in the industry, there is only one way to be right now: rolling around on the floor, rump-shaking, ass-grinding and singing rap hooks. And because the music industry is so formulaic, there is no room for someone like Latifah or Lyte to come through.
Honestly, this makes me sad, because I feel that hip-hop saved my life and my self-esteem. Watching Lauryn Hill, a darker-skinned, beautiful and extremely intelligent artist breakthrough and make an impact did wonders for my self-image at the age of 16. I want young girls to have that again, an alternative to the hyper-sexual, semi-clothed, minimally talented chicks that are out today.
@peperony and chease: Lauryn isn't getting to Winehouse crazytown. Lauryn established Winehouse crazytown and even picked out the throw pillows. It's Hill crazytown, Amy just rents it out.
There's a hip hop show on KEXP, a station that actually supports and plays independent artists, and I listen to their hip hop show kind of listelessly and usually turn it off because of a kind of unnamed annoyance.
It took me a long time to realize that what annoyed me was that I have never once, not ONCE, heard a female voice on that show. I think I MAY have heard a woman doing back-up vocals one time. If even an underground show can't or won't find any women, it seems pretty bleak for mainstream voices.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's time Wu Tang had a lady. They could easily lose U-God and no one would give a fuck. I'm thinking Trina, even a track with M.I.A. or Lady Sov. I'd love for more femcees to get a spotlight in hip-hop right now, as greatest rapper alive Jay-Z has officially fallen the fuck off (don't get me started on 50), Missy started to lose it when I couldn't tell her apart from Brandy, and our latest crop of rappers (with the exception of T.I. and Rick Ross) is underwhelming.
@InkSlinger: I asked the iTunes store to stock her music after I heard her on one of Kweli's albums. She's so good. Sounds amazing, great lyrics, soooo sharp. And X-men references! Best. Ever.
I think there is no space in this world for cool women that REALLY have something to say. Be it in Hip Hop or in rock n roll (does that term even exist anymore?).
Women artists today have like two routes to take, they can be a pussycat doll or they can be really fucking cute and coy. There is no room for anger and telling it like it is.
@ineffable.me: I don't think that's necessarily true. Maybe in SUPER mainstream music, which is mostly crap anyhow. There are lots of folk/rock artists out there, and a few really awesome female DJs.
@ineffable.me: I guess? I don't know. I don't think we can find many good female artists in mainstream music, so I guess I dive into other stuff. Have you ever checked out NPR's music page? It's really good. Also, try Pandora.com. It's loads of fun and I've actually discovered some new (if only to me) artists using it.

She is somehow feministy and popular. Go figure.

That being said- if some hoochie ever taunted me with the words, 'Boom, I got your boyfriend, ha-ha I got your man...' I'd seriously have to cut her.

I love her.
but the extent of my hip-hop goes to Common Market, Blue Scholars and Aesop Rock. Not your typical rappers. But that's kinda the point.
