#1. If she didn't look like her top was going to fall off, I might accept this as a "Victorian" look for some young miss living in Murray Hill.

#2. This is what Carrie Prejean still sees when she closes her eyes and repeats "no sex tape...no sex tape...no sex tape...no gays married...no sex tape..." PS. The dog hates America.

#3 just killed Blofield. AND SHE WILL KILL AGAIN.

#4 is actually Strawberry Shortcake's fucked-up cousin Cherry Tart.

    #5 is the missing Huckabee.

#6 is hoping that her exposed navel will distract us from the fact that she just chewed a hole in her hat. #highglitzbook

Number 4 could be a Zoloft ad, I'm sorry to report. But these are the facts.

That little girl is sad beyond her years.

Ugh, I hate it when people invoke the name of Lewis Carroll when the subject of young girls comes up. In my brain, he is a sensitive genius and not a child molester! Sticking my fingers in my ears now - LA LA LA can't hear you!! #highglitzbook

Lewis Carroll was also arrested for sleeping in the bushes next to the real Alice's house, and her parents put a restraining order against him, so like, maybe he's not the greatest example of an adult who understands little girls or not being a giant creep and exploiting children. #highglitzbook

The 9 year old in #3 has no business making a sex face like that! Someone had to teach her to pose like that, and that is WAAAAYYYY not cool.
Dress up is awesome. When it involves wearing old dresses of your sister/cousin/babysitter and smearing your moms make up on your face. Not when it involves rhinestones, acrylic nails (which made me actually flinch) and extensions. #highglitzbook

I feel like I spend the majority of my time cutting my kid's nails so he stops clawing at his face and looking like he lost a knife fight and yet somewhere there is a mom who attaches acrylic claws to her own child's nails. She must make her wear mittens when she's not competing. #highglitzbook

    These are hideously gorgeous.

I take issue with Greene's comments, though. I've got no problem, as a feminist, with dress-up and elaborate fantasies of little girls that involve make-up, hair, dresses, etc. I have a problem with it putting families into debt, becoming a 'career' rather than a game, and involving things like 'falsies' (breasts, that is) and crash diets for 7-year-olds. #highglitzbook

@Pizza!Pizza!Pizza!: And it's being turned into a competition. I had a dress-up trunk as a child. It was from the Lillian Vernon catalogue, probably cost about $40, and was the best present ever. My friends and I spent hours in it. and guess what? We never once worried about who was prettier #highglitzbook

@colormeroutine: Because there were no creepy adults lurking around, judging you on your ability to get yourself up in costume. Probably an older relative told you how nice you both looked, or maybe encouraged you in the fantasy world you were creating ("Oh look, it's two princesses, come to visit us.")

When people say these pageants are just a glorified form of dress-ups, I always wonder what they would think of a mother who encouraged random strangers to come into her home to watch her children play. #highglitzbook

@Pizza!Pizza!Pizza!: exactly. No one is saying little girls shouldn't play dress up if they choose to do so, it's the big business aspect of it all, that and like Tracie noted, many of them start at 6 months old. #highglitzbook

@otherginger: THIS. And a child that young obviously has no idea what the implications of such a look are. If they want to, let them get dolled up in their living rooms with their little friends and make babysexyface at the mirror to their heart's content, but why, WHY in the ever loving world would you want that out for adults to look at? #highglitzbook

Greene argues that by doing this, we are assuming that these young girls are merely the instruments of their mothers' desires...

I disagree with this. When I see these little girls I am less concerned with why they are in beauty pageants and more concerned with how their participation might impact their perceived worth as they grow. #highglitzbook
