@brinkswomanship: you know, as silly as that sounds, I honestly cried like a fucking baby when Anne went down. I knew it was coming and it didn't soften the blow. To watch a woman literally be beheaded because of double-standards and high school-level gossip is painful. Really and truly. And then they showed her memories of her father cherishing her as a young girl, when you know she dies as a result of his greedy pimping...ouch (Ok - if that was too far off-topic, my apologies; I just finished season 2 this week).

Why he never gets fat is beyond me. I guess they didn't think we'd buy into a large-and-in-charge ladies' man. I understand that he was athletic as a young man, but by now he should be bulking up, no?

@femputer: Jonathan Rhys Meyers seems to have a very naturally thin build. I doubt he could seriously gain weight without getting into some kind of unhealthy forced feeding. So its either recast or go with the skinny dude.

@scarletbegonia: He's stated in a number of interviews that he refuses to become fat Henry, which is such a shame - yes it's Showtime but it kills whatever historical integrity this show has. Which admittedly isn't much but still, how can they not do fat Henry?

To fully understand the mature Henry, you have to show the physical and mental decline he underwent after his near fatal fall from his horse whilst jousting. It is now believed that this fall resulted in brain damage and would explain his subsequent murderous behaviour. The weeping sores on his leg prevented him from exercising, contributed in part to his enormous weight gain as well as causing him endless pain. The television series promised to show the young Henry BEFORE he developed into the colossus of the Tudor world, as depicted in Holbein's iconic painting. Having a slimlime handsome and virile Henry makes a nonsense as to why the teenage Katherne Howard should risk her neck in having a compromising relationship with Thomas Culpepper, if the King were still some Hollywood stud muffin, as opposed to the obese, impotent old before his time man with weeping leg sores which would have stank to high heaven.

@angrychicken: Wow, I hadn't heard JRM say that. Granted, it would take some doing to de-hunk, de-sexify the actor. He certainly has made young Henry a sexy beast. But I find as addicted as I am to the show, I'm having trouble in season 3 because Henry is supposed to be at his grosser stage, yet Jonathan is merely a trifle fuller and greyed at the hairline.

I'm totally out of it now and I spend more time explaining the actual history to Sir Angrychicken (not appearing in this film) and answering his questions than watching. Next season is going to be awesome when I have to explain why Katherine Howard ends up losing her head. Also, anyone else agree that the Ann of Cleves episodes were silly? For a woman who was supposed to be horrifically plain and unattractive, Joss Stone was way too pretty.
