I currently live in and therefore vote in Colorado. I knew about this, but didn't expect the violent reaction I had to reading it and wanting to VOTE NO 400 times. Seriously. NO!!!!!

PS: The "Yes on 48" ads in CO ask you to vote yes because the other side is funded by such radical organziations as Planned Parenthood and NOW. That's their argument. That and "all life is sacred" (footnote: CO strongly supports capital punishment).

Also this is a very strong indictment against the initiative/proposition process that exists in CO and CA. Any nutjob with an axe to grind, half a degree from an online Christian law school, and 76,000 signatures can get an initiative on the ballot, for chrissakes. It's fucking frightening. Hello Prop 8 in CA too.

I really wish people would take a bio class and see what a fertilized egg looks like. Its basically just a couple of cells no different than say skin cells. Should my skin cells have legal rights? I understand that everyone has their own ideas of when we become people in the uterus but I can just never understand how people view the beginning cell division of fertilization as a person. There are no vital organs developed. There is no nervous system so the cells are not feeling any pain. I just do not understand. It literally is no different at that point from any other cell in my body except for the fact that it is dividing and multiplying.

Geez, I wish people would stop crawling in uteruses and dictating what happens to my eggs. Leave my uterus and birth control alone already!

@Lirael: I completely agree with you and don't even care about unborn creatures that DO resemble babies. But their defense is that it's wrong to discriminate against "people" because of how they look - probably even invoking slavery or some nonsense.

@westvillagegirl (exiled in chicago): It's too bad we should even have to try to get it, considering it's the entire basis for our government. It seems that we should have noticed by now that the Puritans don't still have a stranglehold on our economy is that they were lousy businesspeople. You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you. And people now who are under the impression that religion and government should be interchangeable should learn from history and found their own damn colony. I hear that large swathes of Antarctica are available.

I would think she could get a lot more people to listen to her if she would give up her womb to carry several embryos, thus saving them from their horrible fate... just like I'd maybe stop and listen for 2 seconds to the protesters outside the new Planned Parenthood building going up if I knew they had all adopted 5 babies from drug addicted teenage mothers.

I went to an accredited, physical law school and I have no idea how this could be made into a law that would withstand a consitutional challenge. What is the online Christian law school teaching that mine didn't?

I would think this may also invalidate medications (like chemo) that could harm a fetus. I'm on the pill because a medication I take could cause birth defects. I have to be off that medication for at least 4 months before thinking about having a child if I want to ensure that child is healthy. If I don't take birth control and then I can't responsibly take the medication that keeps me healthy. . .Am I reading too much into this?

@hfree: You are absolutely NOT reading too much into this! My father is taking thalidomide and even though he and my mom are, ahem, past reproductive age, there are all these hoops they have to jump through to prove they're using contraception (ew gross - parents). So yeah, he's a 67 year old man, but what if he were a 34 year old woman?

Also, imagine if a woman who just got pregnant, found out she had cancer. The fetus' rights would be equal to hers, so she wouldn't be allowed to get an abortion to begin chemotherapy.

Ugh now I'm pissed

@hfree: Not at all. There are many kinds of medicines which have side-effects that impede fertility. This law would attempt to prohibit you taking them. Hopefully this is one of (many) reasons this piece of shit would be found unconstitutional were it to pass.
