Hey. I like Patrick Swayze as much as the next child of the 80's, but using the riderless horse tradition at his memorial service is TACKY AS HELL.

The caparisoned horse is a powerful statement - and an immense honor - that's generally reserved for higher-ranking military funerals and for state funerals (as in presidents and other major officials). This is typical Hollywood BS, taking itself and its denizens FAR too seriously.

Just because you owned a horse doesn't make you eligible for such an honor, just as simply being dead doesn't make you eligible for a plot in Arlington National Cemetery. Really offensive.

Honor needs to be earned. This was a classless decision.

I don't know what's going on around here lately with pile-ons, but it's getting really Mean Girlsy up in here these days.There used to be room for a diversity of opinion and reasoned debate on this site.

I've been reading Jezebel for quite a while, and I'm really disappointed in the recent quality of interaction. It honestly didn't used to be this way (except with a couple of commenters who were summarily run off for being so douchey).

@♥ dosido☮: That article also points out that the origins of the tradition date back to Khan and also has a Buddhist history. In America it's applied to military funerals, but in general it stands for a well-respected person that can no longer ride on their own. If people felt so strongly about the life of Mr Swayze then this would be an apprpriate honour.

@PaintedTrollop: As much as I do agree with you, I don't think she owes every part of herself to her children. When she said "we talked about it," I took it to mean she and Jon talked about it and decided to exchange the ring in that way. I think that is perfectly acceptable. She shouldn't have to go around in mourning clothes and greasy hair just to prove her children are provided for.
I realize I am spending too much thought on this, but I have always felt some of the Kate-hate has it's roots in the "women should submit and speak when spoken to" camp. Not that criticism of her isn't valid, but if the woman wants to wear a damn ring, I have no issue with that.

@PaintedTrollop: I don't know, I'm okay with the ring idea. Changes wig the hell out of children -- subtractions in particular, especially those in constant view. Changing out her wedding ring for a new ring that has a positive association is probably worth the money, because otherwise those kids see her hands every day and think about the missing ring and the missing father.

I know it might sound like psychological claptrap, but weird little things like this make lasting impressions on kids.

@limber: Also, Kate is going through a divorce from a person she pledged to be committed to, and then proceeded to start a family with. Her life and the dynamic of her family is changed, and it seems like she wants to commemorate that. Her wedding ring was sentimental to her, and this seems like a very sweet way to replace it. And it also sounds like this ring may be less expensive than the one she is ditching. Would we really be asking her to pawn her wedding ring, and any valuables she might have if she had just decided to put the ring in her jewelry box instead? Blah blah Kate is horrible mom because she gets regular (awful) haircuts, tans, and doesn't pawn all her jewelry upon divorce. Because upon divorce, a woman's worth can only be proved if she takes a vow of poverty in order to support her kids who already have trust funds. Right...

@Evie Havok: You get taxed on earnings no matter how many different accounts the money is divided up into (unless some are retirement funds). Generally people divide up their money into different accounts because the FDIC only insures up to $200K (I believe) in a single account.
