There's a program on the Discovery ID channel about Fred Phelps and his lunatic compound. It's called AMERICA'S MOST HATED FAMILY and the host (who actually moves in with the Phelpses) is Louis Theroux. It really gets the angry going, so be warned.
One of his daughters appeared on a radio show in Toronto. The deejay, who is notorious for being a bit sexist, asked her point blank that if she protests everything that the church is against, why doesn't she protest against her sister who had an illegitimate child? She tried to say the geyz are evil. He kept going back to that question and she hung up. Mwahaha.
These idiots came to my town to protest when the local high school did a performance of "The Laramie Project" last fall. It's pretty conservative here, and I was surprised and pleased that my alma mater was even doing the play.
The entire community, led by a group of several different Christian churches of different denominations, banded together to stage a counter-protest that totally drowned them out. It was awesome. It looked like the entire student body was out there, along with a lot of their parents.
@Dearprudence: I believe there is a group of bikers that shield parents of fallen soldiers when these jerks come to picket at their funerals. I think that happened here. People like those bikers who are acting as human shields, and like those people in your town, give me hope.
This man gives the state of Kansas a bad name. Unfortunately after he dies, the rest of his family will probaby take on the cause. They are very actively involved in his church and do his bidding for him now.
He makes me ashamed to share the same state he does. I've lived in Kansas all my life and he is just the most idiotic fanatic I've seen. He also pickets at the funerals of servicemen who have died in action. He's a very disgusting individual.
Call me Mrs Brightside, but I'm so entirely overjoyed that a primary school is acknowledging same sex relationships. It's been a long time coming, and the UK needs to drastically rethink the sex education our children are receiving across the board.
Thankfully, in my experience, we're quite readily outspoken against crazies like these in the UK. If they make it to their protest (which is unlikely) I can imagine they'll be ripped a new one.
Upon seeing the pink triangle pasted onto the mans' face on that poster, I felt sick with anger. Those were what the Nazis used to identify homosexuals, they'd sew pink triangle patches onto their sleeves. I'm not kidding. I realize hate is the enemy here, meaning intolerance/hatred towards those with different sexual identities, but I fucking hate people like this. 'God says we should loudly proclaim our dislike for this or that!' No, actually, God didn't say that. Asshole.
While I think that the entire Westboro Baptist Church and Fred Phelps are abhorrent, I appreciate that they provide a counterpoint. I feel like their miserable existence has in some small way united people with different beliefs against them. While this isn't solving all of the problems in the world, anything that lets supporters of Matthew Shepard and the Freedom Riders (the guys who block out the protester's at solider funerals) get together is not completely negative. Understand, I am not defending Phelps in any way, but sometimes there has to be evil to highlight the good in the world.
@farmersdaughter: I only wish that people could come around to seeing Muslim fundamentalists the same way they see Christians such as these - they're a small minority who have misinterpreted a religion for hate filled gain.
I sincerely doubt that the UK Border Agency will let them in. However, I'm sure that if they do show up my friends and I could take some time out of our busy revision/procrastination schedules to stage a counterprotest. Anything to avoid studying!
I hope that the Beeb sends Louis Theroux for a "Most Hated Family in America Part II-The Phelps' in the UK" because that would be the only upside to this awful situation.
@cuteasabutton's life is a series of sassy montages.: Did you see the part where someone in a car threw a can or something at one of the kids' heads? That, and the moments when he interviewed the younger women, were just heartbreaking to me. Those kids should've been taken away for their own protection.
And regular people shouldn't be assholes and throw cans.

The reason? Canada recognizes same sex marriage. They claimed this murder was God visiting his wrath on us because we are heathens.

Stuff like that is probably the best way to fight the hate.
