She's a bratty, nasty, tiresome, STUPID, ridiculous little girl in an attractive adult package.
I can't take her seriously as an adult....and barely as a human being. I get it--you'll never truly know someone running for public office, but her persona is that of a grotesque cartoon who (as someone else points out) is smiley-faced dishonest and scatterbrained self-contradictory. How can you talk to someone as a rational person when you could Google their sins right in front of them--her horrible history with sexual assault policies, her wishy washy position on choice ("pro-life", but pro-contraception too...whoops, I'm shooting for higher than governor now, so no I'm not)--and they'd still insist it was the media trying them? She's....worthless. She's a piece of shit.
I feel hatred when I consider the people that support her.
She's one idiot--with her supporters, she is legion.
And during those campaign rallies when those people were shouting "KILL HIM!' and "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" when she brought up Bill Ayers, and her stupid face...God, I want to punish them all, banish them to live on an island of ignorant, angry idiots and let her and her ilk lead. I know they feel the same. They see Obama as somethign they're paying for because of us, "fake" America..."real" America is welcome to secede. #sarahpalinoprah
I think what upsets me the most about Sarah Palin is the fact that she lies to my face. The not-banning book thing especially sticks in my craw as a lying disingenuous person. "Go look it up." Madam, we have looked it up, and you are lying. I wish I could just confront her with all of the evidence and get her to admit that she is lying. I feel personally offended that she thinks I am stupid enough to buy her lies.
Then again, I am a huge believer in the facts and science and knowledge, and I will always admit I am wrong when confronted with facts that say I am. I say sitka deer are from India, a quick fact check says I'm wrong. So I was wrong. No big deal. Why can't she just admit that she made mistakes and then move on to whatever her next thing is? Why keep lying? #sarahpalinoprah
@KittyKittyCat: The thing is, she doesn't think that she's lying. In her mind, her lies and distortions are what really happened. She is a constant victim in her mind. I think that she has a personality disorder. I've worked with small-town women like her that all of a sudden have a little bit of power and some charisma, they get in over their heads and then start believing the lies and half-truths they tell as the truth. These sort of people are dangerous. I would not be surprised if she actually did use her position to get her ex brother in law fired and really didn't understand or care to understand that was wrong. She will never see herself as anything but a victim who is always in the right. #sarahpalinoprah
@KittyKittyCat: From "The Weasel, Twelve Monkeys And The Shrub" by David Foster Wallace: "'I'm going to tell you something. I may have said some things here today that maybe you don't agree with, and I might have said some things you hopefully do agree with. But I will always. Tell you. The truth.' This is McCain's closer, his last big reverb on the six-string as it were. And the frenzied standing-O it always gets from his audience is something to see. But you have to wonder: why do these crowds from Detroit to Charleston cheer so wildly at a simple promise not to lie?
Well it's obvious why. When McCain says it, the people are cheering not for him so much as for how good it feels to believe him. They're cheering the loosening of a weird sort of knot in the electoral tummy. McCain's resume and candor, in other words, promise not empathy with voters' pain, but relief from it. Because we've been lied to and lied to, and it hurts to be lied to. It's ultimately just about that complicated: it hurts. It denies you respect for yourself, for the liar, for the world. Especially if the lies are chronic, systemic, if hard experience seems to teach that everything you're supposed to believe in's really a game based on lies. Young Voters have been taught well and thoroughly. You may not personally remember Vietnam or Watergate, but it's a good bet you remember "No new taxes" and "Out of the loop" and "No direct knowledge of any impropriety at this time" and "Did not inhale" and "Did not have sex with that woman" and etc. etc. It's depressing and painful to believe that the would-be "public servants" you're forced to choose between are all phonies whose only real concern is their own care and feeding and who will lie so outrageously with such a straight face that you just know they have to believe you're an idiot. So who wouldn't fall all over themselves for a top politician who actually seemed to talk to you like you were a person, an intelligent adult worthy of respect?"
Tonight. 6 PM. The bar. I call my parents house for help on a question in my sexual harassment online training course. Which, yes, I am taking at the bar.
Mom: "Hello?"
Penny: "Oh, hi."
Mom: "I LIKE HER!"
Penny: "Um....what?"
Mom: "Oh, I thought you were Sherrie (her sister)."
Penny: "Mom...you aren't talking about the Palin interview on Oprah are you?"
Mom: "Don't be so judgmental, Penny."
Penny: "You've GOT to be fucking kidding, mom, seriously????"
Mom: "I think she has things to say."
Penny: "Yeah, bullshit things!"
Mom: "Penny, you just don't want to hear anyone's opinion if it's not in line with yours. I have read Albright's book, HRC's book, and I will read this book."
Penny: "Mom, let's talk about this at Thanksgiving. Is dad around?" #sarahpalinoprah
@Penny: Day after day you work at stealing my heart with your lifestyle and humor. I simply adore you taking your sexual harassment training at the bar. Enjoy that conversation at Thanksgiving. I imagine it will be a lot like the one I had with my mother when she said "Well, sweetie- that doctor (Tillman) was killing babies that could have been born. No one needs an abortion that late, you should know by then."
Me...Silence. "Really, mom? I am at Costco. I will finish this conversation when I am not in public" #sarahpalinoprah
To be fair, I don't think she actually contradicted herself on the choice point. Saying that you think women should be able to make choices that are appropriate for them at the time doesn't automatically include an endorsement of the choice to have an abortion--any more than it automatically includes the choice to rob a bank, or the choice to murder, or the choice to do some other morally/ethically questionable activity.
To be clear, I'm not personally saying that I equate abortion with murder/robbing banks/etc--but I could see how someone who believes it's an immoral act would, which kinda takes it out of the realm of consideration with regards to Palin's statement about making choices for one's self.
@Lux Alptraum: Abortion is legal. Bank robbery is not. Try again.
ETA: and, no, they're not comparable or understandable. Palin's a disingenuous, stupid liar. There's less excuse for people who follow her and try to reduce women to the status of flower pots.
@Lux Alptraum: I also didn't see the first clip as contradictory regarding the double standard for women. I did think Oprah's "but they have wives!" was out of line, and Palin just wasn't eloquent enough to make the connection between her earlier statement and her personal balance ("so much equality in my personal life") with her husband. It was a word choice problem (not uncommon). #sarahpalinoprah
@Ginmar Rienne: I believe you misunderstood my analogy. My point was more that talking about "choices" in a generic manner does not automatically include the choice to have an abortion if you don't believe that abortion is a moral choice.
I'm pro-choice, so please don't go acting like I'm not--but the fact that Sarah Palin used the word choice in a context not related to abortion does not mean she contradicted her pro-life stance. #sarahpalinoprah
@curiousgeorgiana: I cringed at that "But they have wives!" comment. Oprah could have possibly formed a more valuable actual question there.
Or she could have not asked that at all.
How many times have we heard someone ask the current president how he plans on balancing the presidency with having two young daughters? I mean, I really could have missed it but I don't remember hearing him (or any other male politician) being asked how they plan on raising their children. #sarahpalinoprah
@unmoldednicole: Seriously. I was actually surprised that Oprah asked the question. We don't ask men how they plan to balance their families.
There's a reason that the female attorneys at the law firm I worked for didn't talk about their kids. My fav attorney waited until she made partner-- then put the kid pictures on her desk. No one even knew she had children.
@Lux Alptraum: Pro life is not a valid stance, period. So whatever she says and does in defense of that viewpoint is not valid and has no interest for me. #sarahpalinoprah
@curiousgeorgiana: I agree, the first one wasn't a contradiction.
If she had a better brain she would have countered that she has a husband, who as capable of taking care of their children as she is. But that might have raised points in favour of gay couples raising kids, and we can't have that, can we? #sarahpalinoprah
@curiousgeorgiana: At a recent professional conference in my domain, I attended a workshop on balancing family life and graduate school, and I was surprised to learn that many women are still told not to mention their children, to pretend like they don't have outside commitments.
I think it's so sad.
Big fail on Oprah's part. #sarahpalinoprah
@Ginmar Rienne: You're being unreasonably defensive and completely failing to see the point of @Lux Alptraum's comment.
She's not saying that Palin's defense of her pro-life stance is valid. She's saying you can't take Palin's pro-life stance and put it next to a conversation, not about abortion, that happens to have the word choice in it, and use it to say Palin is contradicting herself. She didn't say Palin's defense was valid AT ALL. #sarahpalinoprah
@Ginmar Rienne: Epic Fail. A viewpoint that you disagree with does not automatically become invalid any more than me now deciding that any further comments from you are invalid. Let's not play the role of a 2 year old and put our fingers in our ears when others have a different view. #sarahpalinoprah
@Lux Alptraum: but saying that she believes in women making choices that are appropriate for them, and then also saying that she doesn't believe in, and wishes to outlaw, a woman's right to choose is totally a contradiction. she doesn't believe in women making choices that they deem appropriate. she believes in women making choices that SHE deems appropriate. #sarahpalinoprah
@morninggloria: Oh me too! Since 2001! That makes me Dr. Browning with a PhD in livejournalism studies. Or something like that. Right? #sarahpalinoprah
@morninggloria: "I met her on the livejournal. Which I kept in prison. I have been blogging! After posting an especially attractive picture of my prison-sculpted ads, she commented that not only was I 'pwned,' I was 'teh sex' -- whatever that means." #sarahpalinoprah
@brenbrowning: (actually I deleted my livejournal at the conclusion of my college career. All that livejournalism training, going to waste. It's a shame, really.) #sarahpalinoprah
@morninggloria: That is a shame! I guess you've done about as much with your livejournalism degree as Palin has done with her journalism degree. From what I've read from you, your similarities to Palin stop there. #sarahpalinoprah
Hahaha, I love her notion of what "journalism" is. Anybody who scribbles random notes and "What I learned today!" revelations qualifies you as a damn journalist. #sarahpalinoprah
This may be nitpicky and/or personal, but it bugged me that she responded to the "how do you be a VP with FIVE kids" question with some weird stammering about equality. It bugs me that she didn't or wouldn't just say "yo, I got Todd, duh." First, mommy executives manage to figure this out every day of the week, thanks Oprah. Secondly, the fact that this woman couldn't simply turn the question back around in that way and instead muttered through some weird answer in order to avoid saying the obvious... bugs me.
I'm not articulating this well, so I hope at least one person wades through it and understands why this pisses me off.
Then again, maybe she did and I just don't know because I couldn't sit through an hour of Sarah Palin without psychotropic drugs. And it's not like I'm not already clear on the fact that she is the bitter enemy of a common sense feminist agenda.
Not a bit surprised. When the party with whom you affiliate's platform is packed full of hypocrisy, privilege, and lies, there's gonna be a rhetorical bump or two in there somewhere.
(Plus I think b/c she's had so much other drama, people forget - Oprah's a really good interviwer.) #sarahpalinoprah
