I was just talking about designers with my friend today. I want to know who Lady Gaga's costume designer is and see if there's any more. I enjoy her visual style - is it all her? Who's her choreographer? I wish I knew these things.
I call shenanigans on the Austin Powers costume. C'mon half of that outfit is the puffy shirt and we all know that it was clearly stolen from Jerry Seinfeld.
I used to work in set design for movies and tv. The whole industry is about the directors, the actors, and sometimes the soundtrack. No one gives a rat's ass most of the time. You have to have a very specific type show or movie to "break out". I used to work on Gossip Girl and it was all about the fashion. Hence why, Eric Daman is becoming famous. If Gossip Girl wasn't fashion oriented and just been another teen show like Gilmore Girls, no one would care. Some people work in movies and tv to get more on their resume. It's not like they're looking for fame behind the scenes.
I'm thinking of that scene in the Devil Wears Prada where Meryl Streep tells Anne Hatheway how her sweater evolved from fashion elite. While it kinda sucks that the inspiration behind the clothing isn't credited, in a lot of ways I think it's the nature of the beast--relatively easy to produce, really easy to copy, and styles go in and out very quickly.
All that said, is there REALLY a market for Austin Powers suits?!! Outside of Halloween?!
@brendahamLincoln: I was introduced to Daria when it first came out. I was maybe 7 or something. There was occasional blood and curse words, but LORD, nothing shocking that's gonna mess you up psychologically.
I dunno, Sadie. So those nine year old aren't exactly pole-dancing, in that they don't wrap their legs around and and shimmy down, but they seem to look like they know they should be dancing around it in some fashion, on stage, with male admirers. It's hardly innocent. I'm not saying that's Noah and Emily's fault (forgive me, I remember her name from the last one of these posts), obviously, they're only nine years old, but they have clearly been exposed to this kind of dancing and had it made clear to them that it's a good thing for a girl to do.
I found that video immensely creepy. I couldn't watch it all.
@SkipToMyLou: I felt the same way in regards to not being able to watch the video, but for me there was another layer to it. It's not like these were nine-year-olds in skorts and jumpers dancing around a pole. These were young kids dancing around a pole while they were already wearing sexualized clothing. As a child I certainly loved a good tutu, but black and red, that short and with make-up? Ohy.
I'm concerned for all of the innocent, well-meaning poles out there - street lamps, subway support poles, aspiring assassins of President McKinley - simply doing their jobs and suddenly getting lumped in with all of this hyper-sexualized imagery.
Pretty tough to call that MayPole Dancing. Those little girls' hips belie that.
They know what a stripper pole is and how it should be used: at least, they know about titillation, performing for an audience/camera, being pouty/sexy/serious. I die a little for the young women of America.
@Flackette Goes Retro: Attached to what i believe was an ice cream stand, correct me if I am wrong. THAT made me go "Oh come ON, does no one involved with that show have children?"
Thanks to late-night cable, I'm pretty sure I knew what a stripper pole was at 9. Thanks to responsible parents, I'm fairly certain I had never actually danced on one.
@descent: Sorry, I meant to write, MTV has a ton of videos featuring men at strip clubs and men singing odes to strippers. And I'm sure she watches MTV.
I don't know, you guys. Nine-years-old is probably old enough to know what a stripper pole is in today's culture. I think we also have to tack on about five years of exposure to Noah's mind, too...
What is most disturbing to me is that the girls are seemingly doing everything for the benefit of the cameras surrounding them. See how they keep looking out into the crowd of paps? Little girls should dance around because it's fun, not because they're being videotaped and photographed.
