Normally I don't get emotionally involved with this murder/kidnapping stories because I dislike how sensationalized they are in the media, but every time I see that shot of her from the security camera footage I feel shockingly sad and angry. She looks just like so many smart young women I see at my college every day, focused on getting her work done, and it makes me sick to think about it. I can imagine walking by her just like that and waving. The image is just too relateable for me and for god's sake, she was just minding her business in the lab and happily focused on her work. Awful.
i hate to give the Daily Fail any credit, but as a small woman who carries an extremely large purse, i have often been keenly aware that i am probably frighteningly vulnerable as i walk through the parking lot digging for my keys. :-(
@cantankasaurus rex: I carry a smallish, congested purse. Believe me, its still an accomplishment to find my keys! So, I always search for them while in the store, restaurant, etc.
An ad network rejected Tucker Max's ads — sample line: "Sexism isn't the same as misogyny, you stupid bitch." — because they violated policy of not running "garbage."
@twisted_martini: It's really upsetting. Especially since I'm living on campus right now and the building she was in apparently had such great security.
@mariamariamaria: the running theory is that she had a stalker with a crush, and the fact that she was getting married lead to "If I can't have you no one can."
@Spacegirl goes home: That thought seriously makes my blood boil. it's terrible when anyone is murdered, but when a woman is killed by a man who thinks he owns her, I just want to smash someone's face in.
I've heard of other tragedies taking place right before a wedding. It's almost impossible to imagine the survivors' grief. Or to think about the wasted life.
My sympathies to Yalies and people at other schools unnverved by this.
(Last spring there was a stalker murder [and then suicide] at the college where I work. But it was the same weekend my father died, followed shortly by other family problems, so the shock I normally would've felt at the workplace/school tragedy was overshadowed.)
Sometimes I feel like a snail when my handbag is full...it's like having my house on my back because I hate to be caught without something I need when I'm out.
Plus, I rarely buy a handbag that can't hold a bottle of gin or wine as I hate carrying clanking glass bottles on public transport.
Back in the day, before digital equipment, I had to carry:
A cassette recorder, which was about ten inches square, three inches deep, and about eight pounds.
Extra cassettes!
A couple mics/and mic stand
A landline phone, so I could plug in and report anywhere.
Multiple notebooks and pens
All the research I'd done on a story
And that's before personal things, like a wallet, and something to eat and drink if I was going to be standing in the same place all day, tampons, a trench coat, and a fedora with with a little cardboard tag that said 'press'.
Am I the only one who carries nail clippers in my purse at all times? I always thought my mom taught me well, since I can get rid of hangnails at any time. But people (even girls) have told me it's a weird thing to carry. It's not like they're heavy!

"like sending a child molester to speak to a kindergarten class."
If a kindergarten class fucked up the country the way Wall Street irrefutably has, I'd send that class to Pedophile Island.*
*Sorry, wasn't my metaphor to begin with.

Unless it's big enough to knock out another pedestrian as they pass by, it's fine. And causing problem to no one.
I joke that by carrying around a 10+ lb bag everywhere I am staying in shape.
Which, is actually bullshit.
