Public Service Announcement: I had a hamster who in trying to escape her cage, pried the bars apart, stuck her head through, got stuck, and started to suffocate. So when we found her she was almost dead. I gave her CPR using my index finger and a straw. And it worked! We were able to revive her.

She,um, sort of died shortly afterward. But this is just to tell you that if your sweet pet hamster stops breathing for some reason and you get to him in time, a straw & CPR might just save his life.

@Your Screenplay Sucks: Oh also, you can give fish CPR. I had no idea, but in college the apartment goldfish made a break for it and we found it under a table. My roommate, a certified fish EMT from growing up on a lake, put it back in the bowl, held open its gills, and swooshed it back and forth. It survived and lived for a few more years until my husband cleaned its tank and replaced the old water with all new tap water. The More You Know.

@Your Screenplay Sucks: It's my experience that hamsters never just die a nice, normal death. Something terrible and fucked-up ALWAYS happens.

I once drove my friend and her seizing hamster to the vet so that we could have it put to sleep. It cost like $5.
