I'm not going to lie, I am totally obsessed with vintage salon magazines- it's actually how I learned to adapt vintage styles using modern tecniques.
On another note, if anybody is lookin' for a great set of tweezers, La Cross is still around and their tweezers are fabulous- and cost about $6-$7. If anybody is interested in doing wet-sets like the ones shown here- you'll want to use a setting lotion- I prefer LottaBody (they sell it at Sally's for really cheap), but if you really want to go on the cheap- boiled sugar water (2 cups water and 1/4 cup sugar) or some warm water and a bit of Knox works as well.
Can you imagine if they had to stop production of hair dryers and flat irons because they needed the metal and crap plastic (I mean oil) to win the war in Iraq? And everyone was like "yes, definitely, anything for the war effort!"
I wish they'd make a South Park episode of that. I would totally watch it.
This reminds me of when I would go with Grandma to get her hair done every week as a kid-- she was still doing her hair like this in the 90s. I was horrified that "you only wash it ONCE A WEEK? And you SLEEP with all those pins and curls in it?"
PS. What's so feathery about these haircuts? Seems like a misnomer.
@Everything MidnightBikeRide does is a balloon.: My Memere did too! I couldn't believe she only had it washed once a week. Maybe all that hairspray kept her scalp from getting oily. Hard to say. I really miss her.
Oh, man. I would pin curl my hair every night if the husband didn't bitch and moan about it being "ugly" - maybe tonight I'll ask him why he hates pincurls/America?!
You know, there are days when I wish that we could all feel as connected as we did during WWII. When nothing is ambiguous and the morality is black and white. We're good and the other people are totally evil. It was kind of like that for a few weeks right after 9/11, but then Bush Redux fucked us all up and everything kind of scattered. It would be so nice to have victory gardens and a war effort though (save your bacon grease! Stockings make parachutes! Roll bandages! Knit socks!). At least for a little while.
@Zombie Ms. Skittles: It would certainly make more sense than the "go about your business! nothing to see here! move along!" mentality that has been encouraged....
@Zombie Ms. Skittles: I have to say that one of the things I found most offensive about our current international debacle--aside from everything else that's obviously wrong with it--is that the government didn't even bother trying to get us on board with it. By "us," I mean those of us who are over enlistment age, whose children are too young. All they wanted was for us to mail them our 18+ sons and daughters, and not worry our pretty little heads about anything else. I want to see some creative propaganda, dammit! Not rants from crazy people about how universal health care is the end of America. I want to know that when I brush my hair, I'm helping with the war effort. Throw me a little false pride, here!
I know that they seem ridiculous, but in 1942, we had just entered the war officially. While I won't speak to the hair and beauty tips, the lack of hairpins and razors and curlers could be attributed to the need for the metal contained within those items to be tasked to the war effort.
But you're right -- I can't imagine things like this now.
@NefariousNewt: As an Aussie, I am used to thinking WW2 started in '39. It reminds me of that Winston Churchilll Quote." you can always rely on the Americans to do the right thing, after they have tried everything else". ;>
I can't imagine having short hair. Mine has been waist-length for as long as I can remember. Of course, in this recession a bob would probably be better as I get through about a bottle of shampoo every four days.
I have had a few bobs in my time and I adored them. One time the ex got mad at me for cutting my hair so short. Pffft. Suckas, I looked fierce. He was stupid and had some insecurity about dating a chick with short hair.
I love my bob. It is the ONLY haircut for those of us who are 40-approaching-50ish and are not going to cave to the old-lady haircut just yet.
I currently have my red darkened to chestnut, with the bangs and the shortened neck. It is easy to shape with an iron in the 10 minutes I allow for my AM hair routine.

How hard is it to pin-curl your own hair? Anyone have a link to a good tutorial?
