Why assume that hipsters aren't hitting the gym? They probably are, just balancing it out with extra vegan protein shakes, so that they are healthy and have some "meat on their bones", as a 1950's grandma would say. People can be be "pudgy" (to use another grandma-ism) and still be hitting the gym.

As far as the schlub-with-hottie trend goes, this may be unrelentingly sexist and cruel, but I find that there are a plethora of beautiful women who are also very nice, while similarly attractive gentlemen - not all hot guys, mind you, but the drop-dead beautiful ones - tend to be huge whanging dickheads.

Soon, hipsters will start voting for Republicans. Because it's "ironic." (And also, estate tax reform could potentially seriously erode their inheritance and then they won't be able to afford their cool lifetsyles anymore. Plus, free trade with Colombia means more cocaine smuggling opportunities.)

Remember movies in the 70s, when Diane Keaton and Karen Black and Shelly Duvall passed for female leads and everyone looked more or less normal? And movies had depressing endings and everyone had sort of yellow teeth and the everyday man was glorified (Coal Miner's Daughter, Five Easy Pieces, Annie Hall, Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider, Willy Wonka...).

What ever happened to those movie stars? I want them back. I want back famous people who still had flaws and men who didn't always have six packs. Because if guys who aren't super-thin is headline news, I think the standards we use to judge ourselves by has gotten WAY off track.

Everyday people - that should be the new trend.

@rixatrix: i dunno...i think keaton, black and duvall's faces looked normal...not everything was botoxed and pulled and veneered to perfection, but those ladies were rail thin, make no mistake about it.

@rixatrix: I saw Karate Kid on tv a few months ago and was struck by how pretty, but normal Elisabeth Shue looked. It was refreshing. Would love to see that come back.

@Leigh: This is a funny coincidence, because I was watching The Karate Kid this weekend, too, and noted how normal-looking all the kids were-- today there's no chance that the "cool" kids having a bonfire on the beach wouldn't have spray tans and veneers.

Is it possible (just putting this out there) that what's actually happening is that you have a whole slew of 30 or 40 something-year-old people dressing as though they're in their early 20's so they're mistaken for people who are in the early 20's, except they still have the typical physique of someone older? (I have observed that as we age, we get heavier in general, and many previously skinny dudes develop pot bellies.) I mean, all the Brooklyn hipster types I know are over thirty, and some are over 40. So maybe this isn't so much a style trend as a lens on aging and how we present ourselves differently- or not- as we age?

the more time you spend sitting in front of a computer, the softer your belly muscles become. your "core" doesn't have to do any work at all. this is the reason we're seeing it now on younger and younger guys.

oh, and high fructose corn syrup can't be helping either!

@lavenderstain: My boyfriend likes to tell the story of how he knew I was the one when we came home from a party and instead of being disgusted by him digging into the left over roast duck, I was right there with him chowing down.
