I received a very nice scarf from a friend of my mom's. The problem is, it's a circle. Like a loop. I'm hopeless with these things...how am I supposed to wear it?
3 weeks ago the high was 68 one day and today the high is going to be 26 and tomorrow 19. Maine weather is so crazy sometimes. Not looking forward to going out today.
@Kate- Kate: Yes! In Texas it was 73 the week of Thanksgiving. A week later we had snow. It's been cold the beginning of this week and it looks like it will be conistently cold for a while, but I know we'll be right up to 70 soon. Texas, if you don't like the weather, wait a minute.
I'm watching Lady Gaga's video of Bad Romance, and. . . and. . I can't look away. There's something so bizarre about her fashion and her body movements, which are done on purpose, but combine that with her heavy makeup and ribbon strips that cover her crotch, and I'm vaguely repulsed. Even though she's obviously sexy. Does this make sense to anyone but me?
@deeemer: I think it's supposed to do that. It's about the selling of people as commodities in the music and fashion industries. It's taking away the sensual part of sexual and that's what makes it repulsive, I think.
So, the reason why she wears extreme fake lashes is because she's taking a fad too far, thus rendering it unsexy, and simultaneously commenting on sexuality in music? My brain hurts.
Have any of you heard of doctors prescribing amphetamines for extreme fatigue?
I used to, admittedly, abuse them after I got off of coke, but I've always been....slow, and tired, constantly. Even if I stop drinking, get a good amount of exercise, have a good diet, get plenty of sleep, yadda yadda, I am SO TIRED most of the time.
I did some research and saw that sometimes those drugs were rx'd to people with extreme fatigue. I did have a doctor once try and rx me Provigil but I researched it and found out that it interacts with BC.
Anyhow, just curious if any of you have any experience with this or advice...
@Penny: The only comment I have is purely anecdotal.
My boyfriend and I have both been on heavy pain medications for extended periods of time in our lives and have both been addicted and been through bad withdrawals. None of these withdrawals were anywhere near the severity of my bf's withdrawal from Adderol. It took him almost 7 months before he was feeling completely normal again after stopping the medication. And those 7 months were hell on earth (insomnia, extreme fatigue, anxiety, anger bordering on rage, inability to focus, etc).
Obviously not all amphetamines are the same. My only advice: think about it, get lots of personal opinions/ online research, and get a second medical opinion.
@Penny: Have you had your thyroid checked? What you describe could be symptoms of an underactive thyroid.
Even if your doctor says your thyroid levels are normal, ask for the actual numbers. Some doctors still use the old ranges for TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), which can say that anything up to 5 is normal, but endocrinologists have believed for at least a decade that anything over 3 signifies that your thyroid is underactive (and hence needs more hormone to stimulate it). I had this problem with my doctor who insisted for ages that I didn't have thyroid problems because she was going by the old ranges.
you need to get checked for a few things: thyroid (as recommended by another), hormones (estrogen dominance causes chronic fatigue), XMRV Test (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and you may want to consider finding out if you have any food allergies, including gluten intolerance.
i know I didn't really answer your question, sorry.
@Penny: Scout had the same advice I would have had. As a person who is not opposed to the occasional recreational drug use, I am very opposed to over-prescribing in lieu of treatment.
Get a second opinion, and mention all the conditions that @Scout outlined below. I am, for example, a person that has celiac (gluten intolerance). CD patients are *often* misdiagnosed with everything from an underactive thyroid to anemia to Chronic Fatigue because the symptoms are the same. Regardless of what it is, throwing speed at it... is, at best, not going to solve the underlying problem, whatever it is.
Seriously, through a combination of a lack of money and wanting to finish off my food before I go home on Friday, the contents of my refrigerator are as follows: half a bottle of Bailey's, 4 pieces of bread, Parmesan cheese, and parsley. In my cabinets: half a bottle of whiskey and a box of cereal.
Cereal for dinner it is!
Side note: anyone been watching the Good Wife? I was somehow NOT AWARE that Josh Charles was one of the main characters, and since Dan Rydell is one of my TV boyfriends, I now feel like I'm going to have to watch tonight.
@Dodgergirl: 1/2 a bottle of wine, wilting lettuce, parmesan cheese rind, empty pizza box, chicken broth, and chipotle peppers. I'm not even joking, I wish I were.
Studying the lives of gays and lesbians in the US since the dawn of time, with a focus post-WWII till now. So screwed. Names, dates, quotes, and writings are all blurring together. Sigh.
There is this one gem though: "What is a lesbian? A lesbian is the rage of all women condensed to the point of explosion".
I love it. #groupthink
@SUNNY1: Good luck! That sound super intense, but you'll do great. I'm writing a 20 pager due Thursday. I'm on page 11 and I think I ran out of material. Whoops!
I'm in grad school for my MA in Lit and I'm starting to think (fairly vaguely and without definite plans) about where to apply/what to do after. Anyone know any awesome programs for American lit since 1900?
So I was watching Dangerous Beauty last night (I was drunk, don't judge me).
In case you don't know, the plot is about a 16th Century Venetian courtesan-- and goes into the power dynamic of men/ women/ war/ politics/ and the church. It's fluff, but it is interesting fluff.
I found myself envying the main character, Veronica (the courtesan). She basically gets to read and study with access to an incredible library, wear amazing clothes, ride around a beautiful countryside, and have sex with sexy men. I want this life. Mainly the reading amazing books, studying history all day, while wearing gorgeous dresses.
So maybe I'm glossing over the whole, my mother forced me to be a glorified prostitute and the sole provider of our family part, but you get the idea. #groupthink
@curiousgeorgiana: I don't judge - I LOVED this movie HARD for ages. You can probably find her books/poetry somewhere online (gallica.fr?). My Italian is kind of crappy...but bish did have style. And wicked meter. :)
@curiousgeorgiana: I love Dangerous Beauty! *hangs head in shame*
Did you know it's actually based on a real woman? [en.wikipedia.org]
I always wanted her life. Including the sex lessons, those looked like fun.
@Penny: Number one for me is definitely green beans. Close runners up are spinach, broccoli, and asparagus.
I also am not big on fruit. It's actually kind of annoying sometimes, because people assume my lack of strong interest in fruit means I definitely won't like any vegetables. Couldn't be farther from the truth!
@Penny: I don't know how to cook without copious amounts of onion, and I'm big on peppers (in this order: red, orange, yellow, green), squash/zucchini, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, tomatoes, and sometimes celery for texture. Usually when I cook I just figure out different ways to fit veggies in something, like broth, noodles, or eggs.
@Penny: Everything I cook has onions and mushrooms, but as for vegetables that I would cook to eat by themselves as a side dish: LOVE broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage (cooked or raw).
@Penny: Spinach and asparagus. I always have some of both in my freezer for emergencies (i.e. when I realize I haven't eaten anything that isn't yellow/tan/brown in about a week).
Also any kind of squash, but I only buy/consume those fresh. And sweet potatoes in any form.
This afternoon I received the first of the inevitable regrettable online gifts sent by random business colleagues at this time of year. It is supposed to be a holiday flower arrangement with candles. In actuality it looks like a centerpiece at a party thrown by Marilyn Manson. It borders on scary.
Then again, they sent this now because they remembered that I am a Red Sea Pedestrian, so they get points for trying. Also, it came with a bottle of wine.
Still...
Why doesn't anyone just send some Vosges truffles and leave well enough alone?
