God knows, I think she's awesome but I wonder if she's still working just for the sake of saying she's worked with, what, 20 presidents now? She's earned a well deserved retirement and sleeping in public in the middle of the day may be a sign that it's time to move on.

Besides, she doesn't need to stand around and bullshit with the other correspondents, she's seen and done it all before.

I'm just bitter because I have a number of ancient, luddite collegues who WILL NOT RETIRE. Until they retire I, and my younger coworkers, cannot move up. It's their right to continue to work as long as they want of course, but I silently seeth...

@PrairieGirl: Helen keeps them honest. Also, it's possible your ancient, luddite colleagues either can't afford to retire, or need the health care benefits. Remember it probably isn't their choice to keep coming into work every day.

You guys, this week I totally fell asleep at my desk and I don't even have the excuse of being in my eighties. I lost ten minutes or so. Thank God my retired colleague's position hasn't been filled yet.

Just for the record: chronic insomniac who goes for as much as 3-4 days without sleep.

@stacyinbean: My doc gave me Stillnox (I think in America its called something else) and after a while I reach a threshold and it no longer works, or takes hours to kick in. I've tried lavender remedies, homeopathic sleep thingies, running, infomercial pillows, long baths before bed, milk, not reading/being on a pc, and haven't found the magic bullet yet.

I'm not sure how it started. I used to think all nighters at varsity was the reason but i'm not in that much denial about my issues anymore :)

@stacyinbean: The sleeping agent in Tylenol PM is diphenhydramine HCl, i.e., Benadryl. As a litle kid, I took Benadryl all the time, because it's the only thing that helped my terrible allergies. (Until I started shots, but that's another story.) Anyway, other mothers would ask my mom, "Doesn't the Benadryl make her sleepy?" Nope, it didn't. I had totally built up a tolerance for it. I was a bona fide 8 year-old junkie.

@whatsergem: After graduating from highschool I found out that my Spanish teacher used to throw things at me while I slept during afternoon class. Sometimes I'd fall asleep on my notebook and have a spiral imprint running down my face for an hour afterwards.

Sorry I can't help with sleeping advice though, beyond what I told you below!

@Kivrin: Tylenol PM is awful for older people (it says right on the label that it has to be used with care by anyone over 60.) They can actually get the symptoms of dementia from overuse. Once they kick it, they're okay, but it can mimic early onset AD.

@whatsergem: Man, I was prescribed Stilnox once for a long-haul flight and I have eight hours of my life that are just missing during which I was apparently lucid enough to, among other things, write a paranoid-delusional journal entry in completely different handwriting. I have stayed clear of that stuff ever since.

I hope you find something that works for you soon :(

@whatsergem: I am much the same. I have a weird sleeping pattern. My body prefers to sleep from 4am to about 3.30pm. Which is fine now whilst I am a student but next year when I am in the real world, I am screwed.
