Oooh! Jezebel even covers logo/typography geekiness. There is nothing this site can't do.

I like the new logo, and retro is HUGE in GD right now. Every other new website looks like it was designed by Don Draper. I for one welcome the crazy retro flava, the digital world was slowly being engulfed in translucent plastic gel.

I fall for the GH seal of approval false sense of security stuff, too. I'd like to think they did some research other than signing a marketing contract, but that's likely wishful thinking. Curse you, cynical adulthood, for making me doubt everything.

@Chamalla: Did you see this month's ReadyMade? There's a cool feature on WPA poster art. Several artists comment on their favorite old pieces, and update them with a timely yet consistent message. It's pretty rad.

It's astounding to me how some "news" stories can have such a long life span. The Today show revealed the new seal on November 25, and it was discussed by the graphics design community immediately afterward. Anyway, the new mark is indeed very retro, using a typeface based on the work of famous midcentury architect Richard Neutra.

Swooshes in logos eventually became bad cliches, and it's a good decision by Good Housekeeping to get rid of it. As a matter of comparison, Google Image Search turned up a seal that's supposedly from the '50s.

The new, retro seal kinda looks like they had before, like around 1970. And yes, I DO remember what that one looked like.

@hfree: Ah, Restoration Hardware. Otherwise known as Mecca for those of us who live in places that were built over 100 years ago. And are still standing (barely). 'Cause you KNOW you're gonna have to make t least one pilgrimage there during your lifetime that you will end up paying for - for the rest of your lifetime....

This design is much better than "Morninggloria's Bad Housekeeping Seal of AWESOME" which goes on products that serve no purpose but to appeal to my most childish desires. Most fruit snacks, superballs that bounce between the floor and ceiling several times on one throw, and candles that I can accidentally forget I left burning for hours and hours without setting a massive fire are on the list.

Slightly retro? I think that's a bit of an understatement. I like the rubber-stamp look, but I think it's so retro as to seem trendy, which doesn't equal authoritative, to my mind. Now I'm trying to think if I've ever bought anything that had a GH seal of approval on it.

@linnyt: I actually don't think the old one looks authoritative. The old one looks flashy and loud and swooshy, but not authoritative.

I like the new one more, but I'd have to see it in practice to come to an opinion on how well it works.
