Screw Matthew Settle in GG, what you should be watching is Matthew Settle in Band of Brothers! Seriously, Spiers was hot in his creepy, mysterious, possibly war crime committing ways.
I totally thought the sentence ended at "Matthew Settle as Rufus Humphrey is Bo". And I thought you were saying he is like Bo from Days or our lives. That's where my mind goes.
I don't really get the timeline though... if Serena and Dan are 17, doesnt that make them born in 1991? And doesnt that make Lily and Rufus love time more like the 80s than the 90s?? It seems to me by the 90s they woulda been married off and raising the kids...
Or is GG really supposed to be set in some future New York universe?
Being familiar with Settle only as Speirs on Band of Brothers (and I do recommend his performance in that), I always did find (although I never watch the show, knowing what I know about it only from writeups like this) his character on Gossip Girl hilarious in contrast.
@annejumps: He was AWESOME in Band of Brothers. Maybe the GG character is just badly written and it's not his fault. He did intense and nuts so well ten years ago!!!
I beg to differ. I think Matthew Settle is totally believable as one of those indie/grunge-light "rockers" of the 90s - ala guys from Gin Blossoms or Soul Asylum or Crash Test Dummies or Hootie or on and on and on. I always kinda saw Rufus as the female Lisa Loeb anyway.
@scullymurphy: Also, have you seen his work for Lifetime? He's also believable as a murderous handyman, banker ex-husband with jealous rage, and attorney with a heart of gold jonesing after his client who is being stalked by her nieghbor.
@scullymurphy: I'm with you (and Lisa Loeb was on the show as one of his friends). He's totally MOR 90's rock. Ooh, he actually looks like the lead singer of Train, so it would sound like that shit:
@Macloserboy: OMG he really does look like the Train guy. Weird. I could definitely see Rufus penning, "the best soy latte that I ever had and you," about Lily...
@scullymurphy: I think physically he's believable, but personality wise he is pretty boring. Yearning is completely unsatisfying without something else to balance it out (i.e. Chuck and Blair's push-and-pull).
Let's not forget that Rufus not only looks like their much older, uncool brother but also tries to hard to be their friend and not actually parent. WHY DO I CARE SO MUCH?
@Easybreezy: and you actually know that would totally happen if this wasn't a network show. Because Vanessa has no boundaries and therefore would think it was ok and cool to sleep with her best friend's dad.
@DinosaurDanceParty: Yeah, but around the time that Rufus and Vanessa seemed like they were going to make out, Nate was sleeping with a 40 year old. So it seemed possible to me. Oh, except, a 17 yo guy sleeping with a 40 year old is hot cougar sex! Whereas a 17 year old girl doing it is automatic stat. rape. Not saying it isn't, just another instance of different standards for men and women with sexuality and all that. Yes, I do think about this too much.
I basically fall over laughing whenever Rufus, in his overly-earnest, 90s rocker way, sings that song about Lily: "Everytime you walk away or run away blah blah blah". It KILLS ME.
@Easybreezy: It makes me laugh because it's disturbingly in character because Rufus is a dick.
That's actually what I love about Gossip Girl, underneath the ridiculousness it's actually very consistent with its characterisation.
So yes Dan is also overly earnest and judgemental but I went out with a boy just like that at school, while Aaron is like every pretentious art student I've ever met.
In fact I suspect one of the GG writers had a really bad teen/ early 20s love life going out with prententious would-be musicians and writers because it all rings so true.
I don't think the actors are going to be in the spin-off. From what I read, it sounds like they are casting younger actors to play them way back when. At least I hope that's the truth. Gossip Girl without Kelly Rutherford would be criminal. Although I agree that Matthew Settle wouldn't exactly be missed.
@cassis: Agreed. He's the only member of the Humphrey clan I don't yell at every episode. Nate is a worse character (and Chace Crawford a worse actor), but so pretty.
My husband, who claims to only watch GG because I do (but is secretly amused by Blair and Dorota), asked me once who "that schlubby guy who's always cooking" was. That's how I refer to Rufus now.
