Maybe it's because I'm old and in no way postfeminist but I have real trouble with distinguishing what makes burlesque OK and lapdancing for example not. It's all objectifying women isn't it? And the idea of having that as a fundraising act for a rape crisis centre? I just don't understand it. Yes, I know that rape does not equal sex but isn't the objectification and hence dehumanisation of women something that feeds into rape?

The Lisa Pagan story makes me really angry. She needs to have a child care plan in place and should not be allowed out of her contract because she is unwilling to be prepared. She signed a contract and it was made aware to her that it would be 8 years total and that there was a chance to be recalled.

@Miss Scarlett in the Hall with a Revolver.: Thank you for pointing this out. It's really easy to feel bad for her and blame the military "you're making her leave her children!?!?" But she was aware of the consequences of her choice going into the armed forces. I'm not saying that it isnt sad that she may have to spend time away from her children, it is, but this just seems like she is trying to get out of her contract by playing the pity card. If she gets enough publicity the military won't want to "look bad" by making her go.

@MathGirl: My partner is in the military, and I fear for the time that we have a child and he's deployed. It's not because I don't think I'll be able to handle a child on my own, I have a huge and supportive family that would help out in a moment's notice. I worry that he'll realize how difficult it is to leave your children after it's too late.

I believe in contracts, and I agree, if you want equality, you have to take the good and the bad. But still, I feel for this woman.

The contact lens study is not surprising at all to me. I got my contacts when I was 11, and immediately my self-esteem skyrocketed and people would compliment me on my eyes all the time (they are a slightly unusual greenish-yellow hue). I eventually got LASIK, but i say if a kid can handle the responsibility of contacts and parents can afford the extra cost, then why not?

@shamlet96: Agreed! I got started wearing glasses when I was two or three, and got contacts when I was 13 after a 3 year fight. I would definitely tell parents to get their kids contacts if they want them. I love wearing glasses for fun now, but kids' self esteem and attention to glasses trends isn't the same as adults'. Plus, I can really see better with contacts, it made playing sports sooo much better.

Entirely correct on that assessment of NI's female politics. However, I think you are failing to see the point of burlesque. Most of the audiences at current Burlesque shows are attended by women, and it is darn fashionable right now. You will make money, so don't worry.

@LizbethAnne: I adore cats, but I remember once I was in Rio de Janeiro and I was walking past a park and I saw a kitty and I thought, ooh cute. Then I saw another one. And another one. And another one. And even thought it was a large park I am ready to estimate there were about 1000 cats in there. It made my skin crawl.

@Rosaxe: Yes! This is what I had in mind. I have lived in a bunch of cities all over Latin America and it is fairly common that you will find a park that is, and I know this is not a great word to cat-lovers but it aptly describes the situation, infested with cats. They take over to the point that you can smell the park blocks away, and it is declared a health hazard. I think being exposed to these places has forever altered my image of cats, particularly when I hear about there being tons of them. My neighbor had 9 and her house was a smaller version of these parks. 500 of any animal is a LOT...
