Can I be the one person here that says, come on, Brad Pitt effing is hot. I have had the hots for him since I was 12 and saw "Legends of the Fall." I understand if he's not someone's taste (like if you're more of a Johnny Depp kind of gal, or whoever), but give the man some credit! He is not hard to look at.

I posted this in an earlier thread, but I'm posting it again since the word EUGENICS keeps coming up:

I did experiments in high school and college to find the golden ratio in naturally occurring objects like flowers, trees, animals' faces - and in architecture, monuments and even furniture - and in people's faces with no preference shown to any race, so there's no trace of eugenics here AT ALL - It's just a ratio that the human eye finds appealing, wherever it may manifest.

I've found this topic VERY interesting since I was in 6th grade when I saw a special on the discovery channel with John Cleese lol - and that was 10 years ago... this from a Black girl who sometimes looks like a MonChiChi lol.

I have to say, this kind of does make perfect sense to me given that I subscribe to the notion that people are attracted to each other based on similar facial geometry. That is, people who look alike tend to be attracted to each other because animals have an incentive to perpetuate like features within bloodlines so that they can identify their relatives.

So y'know, there are long-faced people and high-foreheaded people and slanty-eyed people and what-have-you...and we tend to be attracted to our own facial geometry. And I guess the "ideal" face geometrically speaking would be the one that is the geometric average of all the other facial geometries, meaning the most similar to the most other kinds of faces.

Which would also explain why most people find it boring (seeBrad Pitt)...it's only ever maybe about a 40% match to other people's faces, it's just that it's a 40% match to a lot of different kinds of faces. So despite the fact that it's "ideal" most people are going to find a wonky face that matches their own to be more attractive.

@MizJenkins: This is an interesting theory. I think it's true, to an extent, in my experience. I find men with really dramatic cheek bones and jaw lines incredibly hot, and that's like an exaggeration of my own features. So maybe I'm subconsciously trying to replicate something in my own appearance. Curious!

It's the thing that's "wrong" about someone's face that you fall in love with - the smile that slants, the bump on the nose - those are the things that make you want to look at a face again and again, you know?

It's the strangeness in the proportion that makes you go back for seconds.

@Yellowbelt: I think the point of the golden ratio stuff is that it's supposedly inherent; they have little babies look at pictures and they "prefer" better-ratioed faces. That's what, I think, is supposed to make it interesting and "important."
