*sigh* One, as a Christian I really can't get behind these "targeted" Bibles. It just seems wrong. If you want to raise your child as a Christian and teach them things from the Bible, teach them from the Bible, not some cutesy version. Kids aren't stupid, they don't need things dubmed down. Two, I never wanted to be a princess, Jedi, sure, princess, no. #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

@Red-headed bookworm: that's what I love about Star Wars - equal opportunity Jedis. The new animated series that my little Jedis like has tons of female characters who are powerful, strong and don't hesitate to kick some ass and take some names. So my boys will get the message even if some of their female peers won't...sigh #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

This message is also contained in the book "Captivating" - a book which my book group attempted to read, until I staged a feminist coup and recruited others to the side of declaring it was total crap. Our married-at-22, socially conservative, gender-role-believing book group leader was nonplussed.

I'm pretty sure the Bible verse does NOT go "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whosoever believeth in him could make an obscene amount of money marketing glossy versions of his word and telling other people what to do."

I identify as a Christian, and a feminist (a pro-choice one, to boot). This is hard, as in my view some people who identify as Christians have their priorities all messed up. Not to toot my own horn, but a few weeks ago I went out with friends to a city park to hand out homemade muffins and talk to the homeless there. I view doing something like that as living a more Christ-like life than sitting at home quietly exuding virtue to inspire a man to do something good.

Also, my boyfriend is agnostic and feminist, so that probably wouldn't work on him.

There's something kind of silly about going into the sexism of packaging The Bible. I mean aside from the fact that it's THE BIBLE and it does just fine at being sexist without any extra help.

Is this really new? Born Agains like making sure everyone has their gender role seat belt fasted, heterosexual tray table in the upright position and in case of black people an oxygen mask will drop from the ceiling.

That sort of thing is their bag, baby. It's their bread and butter. And I will eat my hat if James Dobson doesn't secretly get off to it.

I mean the Catholics try to pull the same move, but there's only a certain amount of gravity you can give to it when they've got a leader who's a make up artist away from being Divine (zing!). #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

I'm just...speechless. Again, I'm shocked that something that reinforces extremely rigid sex-stereotypes WITH a religious spin would even find someone to publish it. Boys fight for what is holy. Girls sit around and try to exude holiness. Girls aren't worth much until a boy comes and finds them. All relationships can be equated to fairytale ideals that are hundreds of years old, and have been watered down repeatedly from their original telling. This whole ''destiny'' bullshit makes me think of what the monarchy would claim whenever their ability as a leader was called into question - ''I have Divine Right...God chose me to be a leader. Now I will go have multiple affairs and spend the nation's money while 97% of the country starves on the farm. But God wants it to be this way - It's destiny. I'm special.'' #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

I work in the children's section of a major chain bookstore, and this book is currently part of our religion endcap. Every time I walk past it I have to fight the urge to put a match to it. My only consolation is that we've had it in stock for months and I'm pretty sure we haven't sold any.

I haven't seen the boys one, though! One of my biggest pet peeves working in the kids' section is the blatant gender separation in some books, and the insistence of certain parents/grandparents/etc. that something is "a boy's book" or "a girl's book". I often stick to recommending sci-fi/fantasy type books when I can, because they tend to be much more gender-neutral. Having a parent refuse to buy the Rainbow Magic Fairy book that their son requested because it's too "girly" is just soul-crushing. #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

Revolve, the Bible for teen girls is even more horrible.

It says things like "Boys like girls who are quiet." It doesn't even try to cover things up with the princess theme. It just comes out and says that women need to act a certain way.

The worst part is that Revolve is super popular, fucking A. #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

My mom(who reads the site too- Hi Mom!) got mad at me for my name on here-- she wanted me to know that I was NOT raised by heathens, but, really I was and I am so very glad of it. Religion wasn't pushed at my brother or I, nor was it ever with held. we were free to weigh all of our options and decide what was right for us as individuals. My parents never promoted any agenda that said we were better than the X's because we were(insert religion here) and they were not. My brother and I never had gender roles forced on us, my mother taught us both to do basic chores and cooking and it was expected that my brother should be able to do his laundry just as proficiently as me. My parents taught us to be 'godly' in all the very best sense of the word- we care about others, we donate what we can to who we can, we would never exclude any person because of any trait that others might. My parents also taught my brother and I too accept responsibility for what we did wrong-- there was no reliance on the Devil to explain away bad behavior--We did the deed, and we had to own up to the consequences. I am strong, honorable and courageous, my brother is compassionate and truthful, and we never needed a book to tell us that was the right way to be. Sorry for the length, but I wish I could just clone my parents and donate them around the world, they are so awesome. #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

@Raised-byHeathens: I hope your mom reads this. I would much rather live in a world where children were taught how to be christlike (sympathetic, charitable, courageous) than one where children are simply taught to worship Jesus.

(Those "WWJD?" bracelets got a bad rap, but the answer to that question is never, "Treat women like servants," or "Blame Satan for human failings," you know?) #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

@cirocco: Word up. He treated women with respect and they were the first to see Him after He rose from the dead. I think that's kinda awesome, myself. For a 2000 year old text, that's rather forward-thinking. There's still a lot of sexist stuff in there, but it doesn't change Jesus' core message, I don't think.

@Raised-byHeathens: I had an upbringing much like you. Not very religious. Mum's Catholic but she never made us go to church. I'd say the most religious thing we did was Easter and Christmas. There are bibles in the house and we scribbled on the overwrought pictures inside half the time. But I read it a few times and I loved Jesus Christ Super Star. So the Jesus I grew up with was way laid-back and groovy, with the cheese-cloth and the long hair and the loving mankind, you know? LOL! When I finally ran into evangelical born-agains, I was like, "Woah! Which Jesus have they been following? He's nothing like the one I know! The one I know is hanging back with all the other Gods and chillin' and being generally nice to everyone."

So, in answer to WWJD? I'd say, "Probably not what you think he'd do." #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

As a Jew, the "themed" Christian bibles on sale at Sam's Club always confused the hell out of me. For example, if a book is labeled as a "Teen Extreme Bible," what makes it "teen" and "extreme?" Do they cut stuff out or reword it? #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

I'm a straight, white, Christian male and Biblically enforced gender differences between men and women has always bothered me.

    It still does.

"in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them"

Man and Woman are both created in God's image. God is gender neutral.

Except, everywhere else in the Bible, God is called He. Not She. Not It. Not Neuter. Not Shim. He.

Jesus didn't have any problems with women. He was more accepting of them than the rest of his society.

Heck, I wanted to be a princess when I was very young, not a prince. Being rescued was cooler to me back then that having to face the dragon. Let some one else take all the risks and I can just sit back and look pretty.

Oh well, the "slider" that is gender-identity definitely doesn't mesh with Biblical views on the sexes. #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

In this case, the King is God, but all princesses have this problem: A princess is a daughter, a wife or an heir — not an individual. She defines herself by who she in relation to another. Plus, while a warrior goes out on adventures and experiences the world, a princess usually stays in her castle

The "Teen Study Bible" I had as a kid flat out said that AIDS was God's punishment for being gay. It's not so much the Bible I have a problem with. It's people's interpretation of it.

@redqueenmeg: I think the point is that in addition to being frighteningly gender-specific, the book is capitalizing on the Princess theme in a creepy way. Also, no Bibles are gender-neutral, even if they have sensible leather covers. Women are referred to as property in the Bible, and I'm really sick of people arguing that this is okay. #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...

While I agree with most of the article, I want to play devil's advocate with just the one sentence: a "prince" is "a [son], a [husband] or an heir"--a person defined by relationships just as much as a princess. Ask Charles. #godslittleprincessdevotionalbi...
