If the shapewear is so great, why is the picture so obviously Photoshopped? In the one of the woman standing with her back to the camera, her shirt lays completely flat and smooth in the "after" shot, which is not how fabric lays even on someone rail-thin. I'd rather request the Photoshop option than try to wiggle into one of those shaping garments any day. You'll know me on the street by the giant paintbrush icon following me around. #glamournovember09coverlies

While I appreciate the slight nod to the famed Herb Ritts nude 90s supermodel pic, I'm disappointed Glamour failed to provide an actual spread. I was really expecting the "fat girl" equivalent of the all-black Italian Vogue --or at least something in that neighborhood-- and this falls quite a few pounds short (no pun intended) of an extravaganza. I would've loved to see an editorial showing each of these stunners profiled individually, both nude & styled to the nines, as well as a feature article exploring the plus-size perspective of the modeling industry.

As someone who came into the world at the 90th height & 50th weight percentiles and remained that way ever since, often the skinny-girl backlash can leave a chick my size feeling like she's an affront to humanity simply for the way she was born. And sure, the blessed should never complain, and the size 8s-and-up are made to feel like that far more often, () but I appreciate Leive's commitment to break down the divisive "real women have curves'' mentality to strive toward an inclusive "real women come in all shapes & sizes" school of thinking. This may not be a revolution yet, but it could be a few crates of tea in the harbor. At least that's a start.

about the spanx-wearing lady in the red dress - if you've got any jiggle at all, your figure always looks better when you throw your hands in the air. It stretches out your torso. Also, perhaps consider buying a dress that fits and giving up the torture panties? just an idea.

@CherriSpryte: For real. My pencil-sized sister wouldn't buy a dress that tight. As Stacy and Clinton say, it's all about the fit and that dress just doesn't fit. A dress like that will bunch and grab on any body shape if you're wearing the wrong size.

I've worn full-body Spanx and let's just say they're for wearing for short periods of time when you know you're probably not going to have to pee. Yeah, you look good, but you are far from comfortable. It's a countdown until you get to take them off again. #glamournovember09coverlies

Growing up as a 5'11'', skinny kid who looked different than most of my all-American classmates (ie. have "exotic"/Slavic features), I watched fashion shows on tv and felt special. The high fashion world's idea of "beauty" actually boosted my self esteem at a time when few boys had any interest in me (I know, I know, it's not all about boys, but let's face it, it does impact your psyche when you're 13). However, many of the girls most desired through high school grew up to look a lot like these models, except shorter. Few people look at them even now and think "fat". They're basically average weight women with larger breasts and good bone structure. They have not, and would not, necessarily face any obstacles based on physical appearance unless they were to pursue high fashion modeling. Sure, the fashion industry has taken things to the extreme, but what's so terrible about having the "fashion" ideal be tall and thin? As long as it goes back to the Cindy Crawford/not emaciated era of models, why can't it just be? It's just fashion, not the real world!

@lesmontagnes001: I always think it is interesting how many people comment on height when it comes to models. I'm tallish (5'9") and while I think a lot of women want to be taller than they are (5'4" instead of 5'2"), I've never felt like lots of women want to be model height.

Its not representative that all models are tall, but I don't think height is noticeable the way weight is in photos. #glamournovember09coverlies

Time for some experimenting: Grab a copy of picture #2 and show it to a few men (men, not boys). Show it to people in different countries too.

I'm pretty sure most of them would be drooling and thinking these girls are beautiful.

Meanwhile, us women, and the males at the fashion industry, believe they are just "plus-sized".

@MerryLilly: I am in the exact same boat. Waist up, I'm regular model size, flat chested, collar bones, the works. Downstairs, i've got hips and a butt that I love. I'm a size 10 in jeans and could plus size model, but I've got little to nothing up top.

I've been to 5 different modeling agencies around the midwest, each time i was called back, feverishly complemented on my bone structure, hair, skin, etc., but each time i send them full body pics of myself in a swimsuit (keep in mind, i am pretty fit for my 5'11" frame) and send them my actual measurements, i am suddenly not what they're looking for at that time. I tried out as a plus size and they told me I was simply "not quite proportionate enough".

It sucks too, because I don't have an agent I've been doing shows and shoots around the midwest for four years... for free. #glamournovember09coverlies

The observation that these women are all naked, thus avoiding finding designer clothes that fit and flatter them, made me think of that article in a recent issue of the Believer on Beth Ditto at Paris Fashion Week. The author noted that Beth appears naked or in cheesecake-y burlesque clothes in photoshoots a lot, not because she really likes to but because many stylists seem to not know what else to do with her body. To avoid actually creatively styling her, they hand her a feather boa and are done with it. I get, on the one hand, the awesomeness of being able to see the stomach pooch, the gentle sag of the breasts, the rolls, which clothes camouflage. I often think that if we were exposed to semi-clothed or nude bodies of all kinds more often, we'd have a much better appreciation for our own bodies and for the fact that "normal" is so variable. But I also think there is something problematic about fetishizing naked fat women and not bothering to demonstrate that all bodies can in fact be dressed creatively and attractively. Only showing different body types in a state of undress is still exclusionary. #glamournovember09coverlies
